FLOORPUNCH

Get in the know.

MASSACRE GUYS POST SONG

Massacre Guys, the self-proclaimed original SLC Punks, have posted the song "One Man" from their 1984 release, The Government's Music, on their MySpace Page. The band played some of the earliest hardcore shows in Salt Lake City with the likes of Minor Threat and Black Flag!

MAINE CLEANS UP THEIR ACT...

On Monday, Maine joined a roster of states that have outlawed smoking in cars with passengers under the age of 16. Officials say that Sept 1, 2009 offenders will be given warnings, after which they will receive a $50 fine. Maine is following suit with states such as California, Arkansas, and Louisiana who have passed similar laws. Another blow for second hand smoke and lung cancer everywhere, read more here.

AS PROMISED... xREFLECTx COVERS 108

xReflectx - 108 Cover from Grudge City Activities on Vimeo.

THE MORNING AFTER: TAMERLANE/RHINOCEROS

I don't know how many times I can say good things about Reflect before it gets annoying but the band rules, hands down, no jokes, rules.

They're heading into the studio this winter to record their sure-to-be-epic, first full-length. After selling out of their 2007 demo, they've posted all the tunes here, so get it while it's hot. Video of the 108 cover and Clinton destroying his already broken hand will be up soon.

Speaking of Clinton's broken hand, Montreal's Positive Feedback, I mean, Salt Lake's Gloves Off played next. We threw out some golden oldies from DYS, Project X and Sheer Terror along with some contemporary classics from Floorpunch
and Integrity. Thank you so much for singing along
and tearing my guitar cords apart.

An extra special thanks goes out to Joe Jackson for belting out "When Tigers Fight" with us and to our singer Pierre, drummer Pierre, guitarist Pierre and bassist Pierre for making Positive Feedback, I mean, Gloves Off's set a blast.

Buffalo's Rhinoceros were up next. This band finally got to play a legitimate hardcore show in Salt Lake and it was everything anyone thought it would be. Rumor has it they'll be swinging back through town around Halloween with Celebrity, Armed for Battle and Animosity sike a little band called Tyrant. GCA will keep you in the know.

What more can be said about Tamerlane? Best
Salt Lake hardcore band of all time in my book. They brought along all the brutally-honest, gut-wrenching classics and even threw in an epic new song to wet the city's taste buds for good things to come.

Many thanks to everyone who came out, supported and had a good time. August's shows were tons of fun and things are only on the up-and-up for Grudge City Hardcore. Couldn't do it without you.

AGGRESSIVE ROLLERBLADING TO BIOHAZARD IN SALT LAKE CITY CIRCA 1995

NEW CARPATHIAN

Check out Deathwish's newest act, Carpathian, on their new e-card.  The Australian band's DW debut, Isolation, is slated from an 11/11 release. Recommend for fans of heavy, melodic hardcore... think Comeback Kid/This Is Hell.

PREACHER CANCELLED, THE BOYS OPTED FOR MOVIE.

In news I care about, word on the street is that Jesse Custer has gotten the ax as the HBO adaptation of the comic book 'Preacher' has been cancelled. Click the link for more info. In brighter news, for fans of Garth Ennis' other works, rumor has it that 'The Boys' may be made into a movie by Columbia. I wouldn't get my hopes up on the faithfulness to content for a movie adaptation but there a 1 in 999,959,992 chance the movie will be amazing. Feel free to take a moment of silence for the death of 'Preacher' series.

NEW DOWN BY LAW TRACK

The legendary Down By Law have posted a new song called 'Bullets' on their website, so go give it a listen.

They also shed a tiny bit of light on where they stand: "Dave and Sam have been working on new Down By Law songs. They've got several recorded and mixed, and they are now actively looking for a label. The new songs sound great."

IT TOOK ABOUT A YEAR...

but this album finally grew on me. Right in time for Crime in Stereo to compile a new album of previously unreleased material dubbed Selective Wreckage. You can check out a song off the album at the band's MySpace page, here.

CRIME IN STEREO "Small Skeletal" From CD/LP "CIS Is Dead"

AFTERMATH OF A TRAINWRECK

RIVAL SCHOOLS REUNION FOR REAL

"We'd kept in touch over the years, and even did some demoing in the hopes of making another record," Schreifels tells Billboard.com. "This summer, push came to shove and [drummer] Sam [Siegel] said, 'Hey dude, let's do this! We're not getting any younger.' I said, 'You're right. We're waiting for this perfect parting in the clouds to happen. Maybe we should just book a show and play and see how it feels.'"

In addition, the group is making plans for a new studio album, the follow-up to its lone 2001 release, "United by Fate." During the summer gigs, several new songs were played, including "Paranoid Detective," "Big Waves" and "Sophia Lauren," which were intended for a second album that never materialized.

UTAH RISING

Move over, LDS Church Office Building. Step aside, Frank Gehry.

Sandy could land Utah's tallest building - make that buildings.

On Tuesday, the burb's City Council approved a new arts-and-culture land-use zone that allows towers up to 600 feet tall, paving the way for a 40-story high-rise, about 550 feet, near 10100 South and Interstate 15. That's just the first phase of The Proscenium, which calls for two additional 30- to 40-story buildings.

The LDS Church Office Building in downtown Salt Lake City is currently Utah's tallest, topping off at 28 stories and 435 feet. In Lehi, world-renowned architect Frank Gehry has plans to best that height with a 450-foot, five-star hotel.

But The Proscenium could dwarf even those architectural giants.

WHO NEEDS TO PLAY IN REAL BANDS ANYMORE...

In Sept. Rock Band 2 will be released with a few changes. First off the guitar has had a make-over, its been given a sturdier strum switch, better frets, a photo sensor on the neck to help with calibration, and its now wireless. The basic drums now have softer pads which are more quite, velocity sensitive, and have more rebound as well as a sturdier kick pedal and now being wireless. For $300 you can upgrade your kit to a full drum kit, including cymbals, sturdier kick pedal, metal frame, and better pads. Also there is a drum trainer in the game, yes, this game is going to attempt to teach you how to play the drums. I've heard that the upgraded drums can be used freely like a normal electronic drum set as well though I don't know if that's been confirmed. THIS GUY

Not getting a job in Bountiful City.

TUESDAY

CYBER SUICIDE

A Bountiful man shot and killed himself Tuesday afternoon as his horrified ex-girlfriend watched from California via webcam.

The man had been chatting with his former girlfriend online and had apparently threatened to kill himself. The man was also using a webcam that allowed the California woman to see clips of what he was doing, but the video feed did not have any volume.

Bountiful police Lt. Randy Pickett said police got a call from the ex-girlfriend around 4:10 p.m. and surrounded his home, as they typically do with a suicidal person.

One officer called the man on the phone and spoke with him. Pickett said the man agreed to come outside and give himself up, but two to three minutes after he hung up, police heard a gunshot.

39 YEAR OLD WEST JORDAN WOMEN FULFILLS TEENAGE FANTASIES

A grocery store cashier made her first appearance in court Wednesday after being charged with having sexual relations with two teenage boys.

Rashelle J. Wilson is charged in 3rd District Court with unlawful sexual activity with a minor, unlawful sexual activity with a 16- or 17-year-old and four counts of dealing harmful material to a minor. All are third-degree felonies. She also is charged with two counts of enticing a minor over the Internet and unlawfully supplying alcohol to minors. Those charges are class A misdemeanors.

Wilson, 39, of West Jordan, met one of the teens at a Harmons grocery store in Draper where she worked as a part-time cashier and he worked as a bagger, said police Sgt. Gerald Allred.

Over the course of three to six months, she enticed the boy and one of his friends into two sexual encounters, Allred said.

SPEAKING OF REUNIONS...

I know I promised a Victims video today, but with all the other videos that we've uploaded this week, we burned through all the free space on our Vimeo page, and there wasn't enough space available to get it up.

As soon as it resets, I promise I'll get videos from Victims and xReflectx up as soon as possible.

But to tide you over, I did have enough room for this one last incredibly exclusive video, and it's something that you all need to see.

You may have heard the rumor that City to City is toying with the notion of getting back together, and while nothing has been officially set we did manage to catch a little bit of the secret band practice that took place late Monday night.

Feast your eyes on the new City to City jam!

IMMORTAL TECHNIQUE TOMORROW @ IN THE VENUE

Immortal Technique is playing tomorrow night at In The Venue. If you're not already planning on the free Broken Social Scene show at Gallivan Center, maybe head on down and check this out.

Come on. Make Bill Cherem proud.

Oh, by the way, if you don't feel like paying to see Immortal Technique, he's doing a free in-store set at local music shop Slowtrain Records. Not sure how long he'll be there for, but free is free.

And if you haven't been to Slowtrain before, it's definitely worth checking out and this would be the perfect opportunity. New and used CD's (for those of you that still buy CD's), vinyl and a ton of local stuff. It's located on 300 South, nestled in that row of locally owned stores that more of you should probably be supporting.

UNBROKEN REUNION LOOKING MORE AND MORE LIKELY

There have been a lot of rumors floating around about an Unbroken reunion show. One rumor is that they will be playing at the Disembodied reunion in Chicago, and the other is that they will be supporting the recently mentioned Swing Kids reunion in California.

Bassist Rob Moran dropped by the Chula Vista Hardcore message board and offered up his take on the whole thing. Check it out.

"Here's the deal:
It may or may not happen, 100% of the money will go to various charities in SD and Chicago if it does happen. Spring 2009.
2 Shows:
One in So.Cal
One in Chicago
No line up has been confirmed

Amazing people that have poured their hearts into a book and a scene have for the first time, made me and others in the band feel that it will be a fun and heartwarming experience for good causes. I am not going to lie, we have been offered huge money to play various fests in the states and abroad over the past 10 yrs and we have ALWAYS said no. We've known the people behind the Chicago show for over 15yrs. They are honest and sincere people, that have nothing but respect for the scene and their communities. It is because of their good intentions, this whole thing has come about

We said the only way we will do it is if :
A:Undertow plays in Chicago as that band was VERY close to us.
B:100% of the money after their expenses goes to charity.

I feel some aspects of hardcore have been lost to antiquity due to bands doing tours for no reason other then their pocket book, here is a chance for some bands from the 90's to come together and have a great time for good causes. This is why we wanted to do a second and more local show as well.

In no way is it living in the past, it's investing in the future of various scenes. Places like the Che or a community center for homeless families…two places among many that will benefit from all this. That is what this is about.

I feel that I've kind of said too much, but due to the amount of BS that has come out over the internet about who, what and why this show may happen, something needed to be said. After this, people can talk all the shit they want. We know our hearts are in the right place and if people can't see that, I don't know what else to say.

This is going to be a great time if it all goes down...

Love,
-robXXX"

So there you have it. Keep your fingers crossed and start clearing your schedule for a road trip.

JAPAN'S ENVY TO RELEASE SPLIT WITH THURSDAY

From Temporary Residence Records:

After months of anticipation, we are happy to finally announce the upcoming pre-order for the outrageously good Thursday/Envy split LP+CD. It will be a limited edition LP+CD set, which means the CD comes free inside of the LP format; there will be no separated CD or LP versions. This means it probably won't be available in Best Buy, Wal-Mart, Circuit City, or most "record" stores in the mall. But it will certainly be available at your local independently owned record store, while supplies last. We're not exactly sure how limited it will be yet; maybe 10,000, maybe a billion (probably closer to the former, as we really don't have space for a billion LPs). Also available exclusively right here will be a limited deluxe, hand-printed edition. These will be screenprinted by hand, and will be limited edition colored vinyl. The pre-orders for both versions will begin September 1.

GCA GOES TO COMIC CON!

Last month, Sias and I (along with about six others) went down to San Diego for Comic Con. It was 5 days of nerds, partying and hanging out at the beach.

I took along a video camera so that I could make a sweet video of the trip. I've been working on it since we got home, and finally just had to put it up, otherwise I would have just kept working on it and no one would have ever seen it.

I might make a more detailed post later, with still pics and the like, but for now, just enjoy the video. I worked hard on it.

(A little tip: It looks and plays a lot better if you let it load all the way and play it full screen.)

THEY NEED TO SELL A LOT OF HOODIES WITH GIANT LETTERS TO PAY THAT BACK

Fed up with working their asses off never seeing a dime from Eulogy Records (according to the band, of course) the manager of Set Your Goals has bought out the band's contract.

The price: Over $100,000.

Singer Matt Wilson commented on the situation saying: "The truth is we have many options for our next record and self-releasing is one of the best and a very likely option. This has been discussed within our band and management since the buyout was first brought up. Yes, that's right, our manager is personally offering to buy us out because he has that much faith in our band. There's no promise from a label (though many labels have since caught wind of this and gained interest) and no contract being written up with anyone else waiting to buy us."

I liked the first SYG EP and the full-length is okay, but nothing spectacular. The bottom line is that I just don't know if this band is worth that much. Then again, I don't have a hundred grand to throw on a chance, so what the fuck do I know?

HOLY SHIT THIS IS REAL

DISEMBODIED REUNION EARLY NEXT YEAR

Recent rumors of a Disembodied reunion show appear to be well-founded, as the group will reportedly reunite for a show in Chicago early next year. Said show is being organized to coincide with the release Brian Peterson's upcoming book, Burning Fight: The Nineties Hardcore Revolution in Ethics, Politics, Spirit and Sound, which is being distributed by Revelation Records.

Originally slated for December, the event will now take place in late-March/early-April and will likely also feature some notable performances which have yet to be divulged (Unbroken is among those rumored).

Look for official information to surface in early-October.

PRO-PAIN SIGNS NEW DEAL

PRO-PAIN has signed a deal with Regain Records for the release of its 11th album, PRO-PAIN has signed a deal with Regain Records"No End In Sight", in North America.

"We feel that Swedish-based Regain Records is a solid and up and coming label here in the U.S.," said PRO-PAIN mainman Gary Meskil. "They have a professional staff and the resources that are necessary to promote and further develop artists such as PRO-PAIN. We look forward to a sound and successful partnership with Regain!"

MORNING AFTER: BROOK'S BIRTHDAY BASH

First off, Artopia rules. Everyone support and respect this venue. Let's make it last.

Raptor City/Junction City/Ogden City's One Clean Life opened the show. This band is quickly finding its sound and its a good one: mid-tempoed tunes with catchy sing-a-longs and good humored lyrics (who can't appreciate a song like "No One Likes A Tweaker"?)

Seattle's This Time Tomorrow played next. Solid grind/crust/animal rights influenced hardcore. First shows in Salt Lake are always rough for bands lacking gratuitous breakdowns but after a less-than-ideal tour, TTT were more than happy to play to a receptive crowd of more than 4.

Grudge City supergroup, Collapse, played third. Featuring members of Cherem, Aftermath, City to City and Cool Your Jets expectations were high and at least for this guy, they were met with flying colors. Crowbar intro? Check. Gloomy integrity-ish riffs with blistering solos? Check. Tight, Cherem-esque breakdowns? Check. Trevor's glaring 90s rock influences shining through? Check. Collapse is the real deal.

Victims played last. I play in Victims and I'm not some jerk so I'm not going to write about myself. Here's Trevor...

After a false start (my fault, by the way. I needed to get the video camera up and running), Victims launched into their first live set in nearly a year. The lone new song (with the exception of the intro) was a great preview of things to come, and everyone in attendance was thrilled to hear the old Aftermath songs that had been pulled from the vault, especially 'Talk Shit, Get Hit'. Let's hope the 'only once a year' promise that Brook made a few weeks back was all talk, because Victims sound ready to be back in full effect.

Oh, and it was Brook's 28th Birthday and Ten Year Edge-iversary...
