YOUTUBE FIGHT VIDEO LANDS GENIUS' IN JAIL

KSL.com Ogden police have arrested several people over a YouTube video of a high school girl getting beaten up. Two women were arrested and three teenagers were cited for what police call a vicious assault.

It happened Dec. 2 in the 500 block of 28th Street. Lt. Loring Draper of the Ogden Police Department says the 15-year-old victim is from Mount Ogden Junior High. Another student at that school saw the YouTube video and reported it to the school's resource officer.

The victim ended up in the hospital for a few days. She was kicked and punched, her eye socket was broken, and it all ended up on the Internet.

Police say the group beat up the girl because she called them "scraps," an insult among Crips gang members. Gleeful comments like, "Ha, ha, ha. Next time keep your mouth shut," accompanied the video.

The video was removed from YouTube, but not before officers were able to identify and arrest the suspected attackers.

The adult suspects are 24-year-old Paloma Veronica Lopez and 18-year-old Alexandra Elizabeth Gutierrez. They face charges of child abuse, aggravated assault and rioting. They have been released from Weber County Jail on $5,000 bond. The three 15-year-old suspects are from Mound Fort Junior High.

THE REAL THUNDERCATS MOVIE TRAILER

MAN STABBED OVER KARAOKE...

Salt Lake Tribune
A man was stabbed early Friday when he and a family friend had a disagreement over which karaoke song to sing.

Salt Lake City police said the two men -- 33 and 23 -- were at a family party near 1900 West and Gander Lane (1790 North) when they began to argue about which song they wanted to perform.

The 23-year-old found a large kitchen knife and stabbed it into the 33-year-old's upper-right chest. The attacker then drove off in a white Honda, police said.

Witnesses guided officers to the alleged stabber's home, where he was arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault.

The victim was taken to an area hospital in stable but serious condition, police say.

"IT'S A MAJOR AWARD!"

The 1982 classic " A Christmas Story" is running non-stop for the next 24 hours. It's always good at least once.

CLIMB TO REUNITE!

First things first, you can now listen to tracks from the late-90s, Salt Lake band's unreleased album, Reborn, at their newly established MySpace Page.  And on that page, they've announced plans for a reunion show in 2009!

Straight from Jimmy:

You may wonder why I am putting this page together. I have had a lot of people that I run into from the old days ask me if we would ever do a reunion show. We have also been asked if they could ever get ahold of our second cd that was supposed to be released in 98 on Life Sentence Records that for some reason never did. Don't want to get into that. Anyways the answer is yes to both. Through the magic of MySpace which wasn't around back then, and the fact that almost everyone owns a computer these days. The tracks from the cd "Reborn" are now available. As far as a reunion show I have gotten ahold of everyone and we are all down. More news on that in the future. It really just depends on the response of this page. Looking to do it sometime this next year. Give us some feedback and let us know what you think

THUNDERCATS LIVE-ACTION MOVIE TRAILER

This is just impressive. This guy spent a year and a half (!) on this two-minute fake trailer. He took scenes from existing movies with Brad Pitt, Vin Diesel and Hugh Jackman and then went through each and every second adding the effects to each frame via Photoshop.

If he expanded this into an entire film, it would still be about as good as Transformers. Check it out.

BOUNCING SOULS CELEBRATE 20 YEARS

The Bouncing Souls have been making awesome punk rock records for 20 years now, and to celebrate they're going to release one new song a month on their website, www.chunksaah.com .

You'll be able to buy them as a digital download first, then every few months, they'll compile the already released songs onto 7".

Sounds like a good idea to me.

"ALL YOU MOTHERFUCKERS ARE GOING TO DIE!" - JOHN JOSEPH, FEAR AND SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE

HEADBANGING CAUSES BRAIN DAMAGE?

Blabbermouth -- According to Australia's ABC News, two University of New South Wales (UNSW) researchers concluded in a study published in the British Medical Journal this week that headbanging to a typical heavy metal tempo could cause mild traumatic brain injury or concussion, and neck injury, particularly as the tempo of the music and angle of movement increased.

"Clearly it's a serious issue," says Associate Professor Andrew McIntosh, co-author and professor of biomechanics at UNSW.

"If you observe people after concerts they clearly look dazed, confused and incoherent, so something must be going on and we wanted to look into it."

After careful observation of the behaviour of heavy metal concert-goers, McIntosh and honours student Declan Patton constructed a theoretical headbanging model to better understand the mechanics of the practice.

They also spoke to a focus group of local musicians to identify ten popular songs to headbang to.

"These songs had an average tempo of 146 beats per minute, and at this tempo we predict that head banging can cause headaches and dizziness if the range of movement of the head and neck is greater than 75°," the researchers wrote.

WHAT DO SALT LAKE CITY, RYAN PHILLIPE, CLUB BRICKS, SARAH SILVERMAN GETTING PUNCHED IN THE FACE AND "THE MAN DANCE" HAVE IN COMMON?

UTAHNS HATE FREEDOM?

Salt Lake City Weekly -- Here is how much our electorate in this state sucks (taken from George Washington University data): We have 1.77 million eligible voters and only 952,370 of them voted. In 2004, when Utah voters rallied for George W. Bush, only 58.9 percent of us voted.

We are 47th in the nation for 2008 voter participation. West Virginia and Hawaii tied for dead last, with 50.6 percent turnout. Then Arkansas at 53.4 percent, followed by the nearly equally ignorant and unengaged masses in the Beehive State with 53.8 percent.

THE LEONARDO PUSHES FORWARD

Salt Lake Tribune -- If The Leonardo [The museum beside the downtown library currently featuring the Body World exhibit] comes up with enough money to tap a $10.2 million voter-approved bond, it can count on Salt Lake County to commit $360,000 to the project.

The County Council will stand by its financial contribution to the downtown science and cultural attraction -- despite fundraising snags that have kept The Leonardo from going forward.

"Our community really needs these kinds of facilities to be the kind of community we want to be," Democratic Councilman Randy Horiuchi said. But Tuesday's decision was bittersweet for The Leonardo. While the venue would get the money, it wouldn't be as much as the $400,000 the council originally offered. With the economy in decline, officials trimmed the donation by 10 percent.

PUMPKINS WANT TO SMASH THE FULL-LENGTH

What are your thoughts?

PunkNews -- According to a report from Kerrang, Smashing Pumpkins will be avoiding albums in the future and focusing on singles. The band's frontman, Billy Corgan, explained:

"People don't even listen to it all. They put it on their iPod, they drag over the two singles, and skip over the rest. The listening patterns have changed. So why are we killing ourselves to do albums? Our primary function now is to be a singles band. We'll still be creative, but in a different form."

EARTH CRISIS GUITARIST ON "TO THE DEATH"

Blabbermouth -- Reunited hardcore legends EARTH CRISIS have set "To The Death" as the title of their new album, due March 2009 via Century Media Records. The self-produced CD was recorded at Castle Recording Studios in Utica, New York and is currently being mixed by Tue Madsen (HEAVEN SHALL BURN, DARK TRANQUILLITY, MOONSPELL, THE HAUNTED). Guitarist Scott Crouse tells Revolver magazine, "We aren't purposely trying to recapture the past, but I think we have harnessed some of the fire that set us apart from the pack early on. It's great being able to look back on our previous work and see what aspects have stood the tests of time; not many bands have that luxury."

TODD FROM STARKWEATHER SAYS THANK YOU

It was 40 insane hours. It was 2 time zones. It was 4 flights. It was one of the best shows Starkweather has ever played. It was one of the best shows ever because of you, not us. We were ragged, we fucked up, we were exhausted in sick from the altitude, but we were also given the opportunity to play in front of people that cared about us, people that felt, on a visceral level, what Starkweather was and still is about. There are the obvious thank you's; Nate for risking putting his money on the line, there was Clint who kept things organized on our end, Casey who apparently hatched this whole fucked up scheme, Trevor and the kind guys in Tamerlane who loaned us there gear, Jack for his bitter humor and for being the only only straight up thug looking motherfucker to ever have Nietsche tattoed on his neck, Mike for shuttling us from the airport to our hotel and for the kind words he shared with me, Brook from Este for his hospitality, Slug Magazine, the City Weekly, my brother Colin for the hotel rooms, food, travel expertise, and calm 'American Psycho' like demeanor, Mister Murren for properly representing da Bronx, and last but definitely not least, Jan Vermeerbergen for making the trip from Antwerp, Belgium, for being the ONLY guy who could get Starkweather to Europe, for putting out the amazing 'Croatoan' vinyl, and for providing endless humor when things got tense.

Not so obvious thank you's:

Every single person that walked through the door at Club Sound. You, and not us, made this show the success and amazing memory that it was. You made sure that Nate made his money back, made us feel like family, and whether you stayed for our set or not, you made us feel like the 20 year olds that we haven't been for a long time.

The Mormon Church for making it feel not so wrong to want to bang very young girls.

The Red Iguana for serving up the best fucking Mexican food I've ever had.

Pat the van driver, Club Sound and their soundman, xReflectx, and Sleeping Giant for bringing their sizable followings and for rocking the fucking house

X43X BLOG FEATURES XREFLECTX

X43X is run by Justin, singer of Portland's sadly-deceased Dead Unknown. The blog features info on and downloads from '90s hardcore acts from Chain of Strength to Torn Apart. It's mission: to make sure the era's awesome, hard-to-find hardcore doesn't go the way of the buffalo.

So it's fitting that he should feature our own XReflectX. Check out the piece here. And check out his new band, Unrestrained, while you're at it. They rule!

ONE WEEK AND TWO MORNINGS AFTER: STARKWEATHER

First things first. Thank you to the 400-or-so of you who came out in the cold to make this show so excellent. We appreciate the support more than we could ever express in words.

Thank you to Starkweather for coming all the way out west. I'm confident I'm speaking for many when I say I never thought I would see you perform and the show far surpassed my highest expectations.

We should all be thankful for Tamerlane, Sleeping Giant and XReflectX--three examples of the amazing talent and dedication that Salt Lake City has to offer.

And finally, many thanks to Slug Magazine, City Weekly, Red Pulse Magazine, Club Sound, Este Pizza, Greywhale Music and anyone who helped spread the word about the show by tacking up flyers, posting online bulletins or telling friends.

All that can be said about the show is that each of the bands played their hearts out. Fun was had by all and memories were made.

Videos and pictures will be posted for weeks to come, including an interview with Starkweather. These will give a much better picture of the evening than some hazy recap. Find pictures at the GCA Photo Archive and videos at the GCA Video Archive.

NACHTMYSTIUM (DON'T JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS CHEESY METAL NAME)

It's rare these days to hear something unique in the metal world--unless you're into The End Records, their shit's consistently wacky. Anyway, it seems every other band is a Sabbath or Maiden or Slayer carbon-copy. Or worse, a carbon-copy of At the Gates' Maiden influence or Pantera's Sabbath influence.

Nachtmystium combines creepy black metal melodies with stoner rock drones and punk rock simplicity. If it sounds like something you'd be into, check out some new music here.

MINOR THREAT VS. SLAPSHOT: IT'S A DEAD HEAT

This poll was described pretty poorly the first time around so here's the deal. It's nearly impossible to determine a band's influence on a hardcore scene so we're going with pure opinion. Vote for the band you like more.

The reason it's Minor Threat vs. Slapshot is that Salt Lake, unlike probably anywhere but Boston, is the only place where Slapshot has a fighting chance at taking this.

DEATH BY PIZZA

Chron -- MIRAMAR, Fla. — Police say a pizza delivery man fought back with the one weapon he had handy when a gun was pulled on him in a stickup: A large, hot pepperoni pizza.

Delivery man Eric Lopez Devictoria, 40, flung the steaming pie at the gunman, buying time as he ran for safety, police said.

At least one shot was fired as Devictoria fled, but the deliveryman wasn't hurt and was able to quickly call police, according to authorities.

Three teenage suspects were nabbed soon after Wednesday's run-in with the cheesy weapon, police said, adding they were charged with armed robbery.

GUITAR HERO: METALLICA IN THE WORKS

Blabbermouth -- The new issue of Game Informer magazine, which has made its way to subscribers, has reportedly offered an exclusive first-look at the upcoming Guitar Hero: Metallica.

According to 1UP.com, the METALLICA-branded game follows the World Tour philosophy by allowing for full band play — drums, guitar, vocals, bass. In addition, the game will sport a new difficulty level for drummers — one that allows for use of double kick pedals — along with new METALLICA tones for the included GHTunes music creator. Also — like Guitar Hero: Aerosmith before it — this game's roughly 45-song tracklist will be comprised of more than just METALLICA songs, including other bands that have been influential throughout the metal group's nearly 30-year history.

Rumored Guitar Hero: Metallica tracks:

Songs by METALLICA:

* "Enter Sandman"
* "For Whom The Bell Tolls"
* "Fuel"
* "Hit The Lights"
* "King Nothing"
* "Master of Puppets"
* "No Leaf Clover"
* "Nothing Else Matters"
* "Sad But True"
* "The Unforgiven"
* "Where I May Roam"

Songs by other artists:

* "No Excuses" by ALICE IN CHAINS
* "Turn The Page" by BOB SEGER
* "Hell Bent For Leather" by JUDAS PRIEST
* "Demon Cleaner" by KYUSS
* "Tuesdays Gone" by LYNYRD SKYNYRD
* "Blood and Thunder" by MASTODON
* "Armed and Ready" by MICHAEL SCHENKER GROUP
* "Mother of Mercy" by SAMHAIN
* "Black River" by THE SWORD

7 SECONDS LOGO THEFT

PunkNews -- Jack & Jones, a European clothing manufacturer, has produced a t-shirt that bears a striking resemblance to the logo of long-running punk band 7 Seconds. The shirt, which is available, at least, in malls across Canada, depicts the cover of what appears to be a 'zine called 9 Seconds. When the shirt design was brought to the attention of Side One Dummy Records, the band's current label, representatives said "Yea, that looks just like a 7 Seconds shirt, wow!"

It's not completely unheard of for a clothing manufacturer to use punk imagery in advertising. Just a few years ago, Nike was caught borrowing heavily from the work of Minor Threat.
