Over the edge
Punk anti-drug group toes violent line in Salt Lake

From The Denver Post
Posted on 07/23/06

James Bockas, Eagle Scout and cornerback for the Weber High Warriors by day, leads a different, less apple-pie life by night.

Ruddy-cheeked with crystal-blue eyes, the 17-year-old comes from a strong Mormon family, mows lawns for gas money and is a member of Straight Edge, a movement that, on its face, is a parent's dream: Its adherents abstain from alcohol, drugs and smoking.

WHY?

Did anyone go see his show on the 12th?

JON STEWART SHOW MUSICAL GUEST DAY

Anyone remember this show? I know I do. Great acts from Danzig to the Notorious B.I.G. to Quicksand and Sunny Day Real Estate graced the stage of the Jon Stewart Show in the early '90s. Sadly, those videos aren't online. But here's what we could dig up.

We'll start off with Mr. Stewart introducing "one of his favorite bands of all time," Bad Religion...

MARILYN MANSON - "LUNCH BOX"

SLAYER - "SEASONS IN THE ABYSS"

SAMIAM - "CAPSIZED"

One of my favorite bands of all time.

HELMET - "WILMA'S RAINBOW"

OL' DIRTY BASTARD - "BROOKLYN ZOO"

FAITH NO MORE - "DIGGING THE GRAVE"

OGDEN MAN SHOT IN THE EYE

What are the odds?

Salt Lake Tribune -- A 21-year man was taken to a North Ogden fire department Wednesday afternoon with a gunshot wound to his eye and police have arrested a second man for shooting him.

Just after 2 p.m., firefighters at North View Fire Department heard a man banging on the station door and yelling that his friend needed an ambulance, said North View fire Deputy Chief Dave Wade.

Paramedics went outside and found the 21-year-old man conscious and breathing in his friend's car holding a towel over his bloody eye, Wade said. They treated him, put him on a gurney and sent him to Ogden Regional Medical Center in an ambulance, Wade said.

The man's friend drove to the fire station from a residence about a mile away, Wade said.

According to Harrisville Police Chief Max Jackson, the man who was shot had been in a fight or dispute with another man who grabbed the gun and shot the man. The bullet apparently only grazed the 21-year-old, but he may lose the eye, Jackson said.

The shooter was arrested.

STREET DOGS RELEASE SINGLE FOR CHARITY

PunkNews -- Street Dogs have announced a new charity single. The band will donate 100% of all profits from the sale of this track to Homes For Our Troops, a non-profit organization that assists servicemen and women who have returned home with serious disabilities and injuries. Homes For Our Troops is a non-profit, non-partisan, 501(c)(3) organization founded in 2004 and named a top rated charity by the American Institute of Philanthropy (AIP)

In addition, Street Dogs have added a new section entitled "Veteran's Aid" to their website, a resource guide which provides links to organizations helping veterans transition back into society with mental health services, housing, financial aid and more.

The single, "War After The War," is due out March 10th, 2009.

PROSTITUTE DISFIGUREMENT

The 8-episode release has ben slated for March 17th.

This is what they have to say about their new record, available April 29: "That’s right, NOFX have your coffee table in mind this spring with the release of their 12th full length studio record, Coaster. Not only will Coaster protect your favorite end table from that offending gin and juice cocktail, but music will also be included! That means 12 brand new songs to sip that drink to. MIKE PATTON SCORES CRANK 2

Mike Patton—of Faith No More, Mr. Bungle, Fatomas, and Dillinger Escape Plan at one point—has just finished his first feature length film score for the new Jason Statham action pic, Crank 2: High Voltage.

Crank was completely ridiculous but fun, and I'm sure Crank 2 will be somewhere along the same lines. Here's a plot synopsis: "In spite of having fallen a mile from a helicopter at the end of CRANK, Chev Chelios faces a Chinese mobster who has stolen his nearly indestructible heart and replaced it with a battery-powered ticker that requires regular jolts of electricity to keep working."

Here's the red band (read: R-rated) trailer. Now just imagine some Mike Patton-esque craziness to go along with it. Should be good times.

REVIVER COVERS REFUSED

OCHC THEFT

Bummer...

Someone took money from OCL and Raptor city.

Because of this we are short on the money we need to book the venue for Trash Talk, No Truce, and Steel Nation. It's kind of sad that someone would care more about themselves than being able to have good bands come to UT. If you can help by donating any money at all call or text Alex or JP at 801-814-4566, 801-645-0894. Thanks.

HOW-TO TOUR

Awhile back, our own Trevor Hale wrote an article for the City Weekly on what it's like to be in a touring band.

NOT POP REVIEWS REVIVER

Reviver - Versificator
Exigent Records
8 of 10 Stars

Reviver is a band that I have only recently discovered due to the fortunate tour routing on their upcoming tour. They come from Salt Lake City and they bring with them a unique style of melodic hardcore/punk that is quickly addicting and very enjoyable. ‘Versificator’ is the band’s debut full-length out on Exigent Records, it was released last year in July and it a powerful debut...
