SALT LAKE'S LITTLE "r" REPUBLICAN

Salt Lake Tribune -- Salt Lake County Councilman Max Burdick better hope that his Republican colleagues don't see this.

The first-year councilman -- who distinguished himself less than two months after taking office as the only Republican to support health-care benefits for the same-sex partners of county employees -- made an unexpected appearance this month in the state's leading gay and lesbian magazine.

Q Salt Lake captured Burdick in a photo booth during the magazine's recent FABBY Awards bash -- which honors people and organizations that support the gay community -- pulling faces with Democratic Sen. Scott McCoy.

The councilman, who never imagined that the photos would be circulated outside the booth, soon found his face in a double-page spread in Q Salt Lake 's May 14 edition.

"Some partygoers thought being behind the curtain meant no one would see," the magazine's caption reads.

The photo strip could provide the councilman's GOP colleagues with yet another reason to complain that Burdick, whom Democrats once described as a little "r" Republican, leans too far to the left.

On the bright side, Burdick hasn't earned the recognition that he, jokingly, told The Salt Lake Tribune he most fears: "Man of the Year" from gay-rights group Equality Utah.

SLOW NEWS DAY

So enjoy some Sheer Terror:

LOSER OF THE DAY: RICK KOERBER

Salt Lake Tribune -- Rick Koerber picked three words to describe himself on his blog:

Capitalist, Mormon, Dad -- in that order. It was both his philosophy and his cover.

Koerber's hyper-economic, hyper-religious version of conservatism helped him cozy up to state politicians while, investigators say, he duped scores of investors.

He is accused of running a $50 million Ponzi scheme, convincing his Utah County neighbors to take out second mortgages on their homes and invest the proceeds with him -- so-called "equity milling." Many of those who did are out their life savings or facing foreclosure.

NINTENDO DEVOLUTION

"A paper city designed to be able to play as a build-it-yourself board game. it comes complete with a plexi-glass container along with the blueprints to the pieces so that the user can cut them out and assemble them. the rules of the game can also be located on the back of the 'controllers'."

Super Mario World Board Game was designed by Ashley Buerkett.

MOSH SAFETY? NO, NO, NO, MOSHE SAFDIE

Salt Lake Tribune -- Moshe Safdie may get another chance to put his design stamp on downtown Salt Lake City.

The famed architect, whose vision led to the capital's striking Main Library, is among two development groups that have petitioned to build the $81.5 million Broadway-class theater pitched by Mayor Ralph Becker for 135 S. Main.

The Safdie team bid includes Salt Lake City library architectural firm VCBO and contractor Okland Construction along with developers Swisher, Garfield, Traub and Hamilton Partners, which is building a new office tower at 222 S. Main.

The other party to respond to the city's theater request is Hines Interests, said D.J. Baxter, executive director of the city's Redevelopment Agency. According to its Web site, Hines is an international real estate firm with a presence in more than 100 cities. Hines also owns the Kearns Building on Main Street.

"To have that caliber speaks very well of Salt Lake City," said City Councilman Eric Jergensen. "I'm excited. You've got nationally known developers with financial firepower as well as a group of local architects that have shown their design finesse with the library."

GREAT SALT LAKE TOXINS (SORRY, NOT A NEW LOCAL BAND)

SALT LAKE TRIBUNE -- Utah says it's alright for selenium to kill up to one out of 10 birds on the Great Salt Lake. But a federal agency says that a state regulation based on that view is illegal under an international treaty.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service warns of the potential violation in a letter to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

UC IRVINE STUDENTS SEEK FUN IN PROVO, LIVE TO WRITE ABOUT IT

NEW UNIVERSITY -- If you thought Irvine was boring, try setting foot in Provo. Don’t get me wrong, Provo has its own culture, one that revolves around morals and religious beliefs. However as an outsider, it is very difficult to say the city is exciting.

Almost everything closes at 8 p.m. on the weekdays, and ironically enough, even earlier on weekends. We didn’t cross any coffee shops in Provo, and only one bar was open past 1 a.m. And let me tell you, that bar was weird.

WIZARD FEST THIS WEEKEND!

SLUG -- You’ve probably never heard of Tommy Dolph’s Wizard Fest. He probably likes it better that way. If this outdoor music fest blew up like others it would lose its charm. Wizard Fest is in its fourth year and if you’re web-savvy, love local music and are comfortable with driving towards the middle of nowhere––you might find yourself at one hell of a party.

This year’s live-music line up includes Dos Hombres Van A Morir, Sunday School, Ben Thunderblood, Antelope Island, Reciprocal Redux and Dolph’s own band After the Party. Dolph’s party will also feature the trickery of magician Matt Bruce, an art show and a “local history mystery” museum to give partygoers a bit of background on the location.

The fun goes down on Saturday, May 30.

DIRECTIONS TO WIZARDFEST 2009 AT LOCOMOTIVE SPRINGS

You can access Locomotive Springs from northbound I-15 by taking the Corinne exit and traveling west on Hwy 83 towards Thiokol, then west at Lampo junction (Promontory), past the Golden Spike National Monument, Howell Valley junction (end of paved road) and staying on the county gravel road traveling west for about 25 miles. Signs are present to help direct you on the county road.

JUDGE DOCUMENTARY

From Joseph Patt:

This is a rough cut of a short documentary that Porcell, Sam Siegler I were doing together. This is not final. The audio is NOT mixed and the graphics were never finalized. Unfortunately I had a hard drive crash and lost all the elements which stopped us from wrapping this project up and making it complete. This version is close to final and all I had left over.
I hate showing incomplete work so please don't JUDGE it too harshly (pun intended), I just want to show what it was going to be to anyone that may have heard about this and wondered why it never came out while also find a bit of closure in it for myself.

Also it needs to be noted that this is owned by Revelation Records

NEW LAW DESIGNATES GANG-FREE ZONES

Salt Lake Tribune -- A new law enabling cities to designate gang-free zones --- giving police the authority to disperse suspected gang members loitering in certain locations -- took effect this month.

But few cities are jumping to use it.

Sponsored by Sen. Jon Greiner, R-Ogden, the legislation passed after weeks of debate over whether it would foster racial profiling or infringe upon constitutional rights. Under the new law, loitering gang members can be charged with a Class B misdemeanor if they don't leave a gang-free zone. Offenders can be subject to a $100 fine.
