THE GASLIGHT ANTHEM AND THE BOSS

The Gaslight Anthem has basically been paying tribute to Bruce Springsteen its entire career, so this was probably a dream come true.

Plus, The Boss kicks ass.

Head over to check them out!

13 YEAR OLD REVIEWS WALKMAN

"When the Sony Walkman was launched, 30 years ago this week, it started a revolution in portable music. But how does it compare with its digital successors? The Magazine invited 13-year-old Scott Campbell to swap his iPod for a Walkman for a week.
My dad had told me it was the iPod of its day.
He had told me it was big, but I hadn't realised he meant THAT big. It was the size of a small book.
When I saw it for the first time, its colour also struck me. Nowadays gadgets come in a rainbow of colours but this was only one shade - a bland grey."

This kid is either really smart or had a lot of help. Either way, good read.

GCA WEEKEND PREVIEW JUNE 26-28

Not much going on this weekend because no one wants to go head to head with a local juggernaut.

ALL WEEKEND
The Utah Arts Festival is going on at Library Square. Lots of local talent will be on display this weekend, so get down and check it out.

SATURDAY
Matisyahu is playing at In The Venue and Jay Leno performs in Wendover. If neither of those are your cup of tea and you've already done the Arts Festival, you might be out of luck. BBQ in your backyard instead.

Like I said, kind of a dull weekend. What are your plans?

IS SIX WEEKS REALLY TOO YOUNG TO DRINK?

ASSOCIATED PRESS:
GRAND FORKS, N.D. - A North Dakota woman accused of breast-feeding her 6-week-old baby while drunk has pleaded guilty to child neglect.

Twenty-six-year-old Stacey Anvarinia could face up to five years in prison when she's sentenced on the felony charge in August.

Judge Sonja Clapp says Anvarinia will not have to register as an offender against children.

Police officers who responded to a domestic disturbance call at Anvarinia's home on April 13 say they saw an intoxicated Anvarinia breast feeding. Health officials say alcohol consumed by breast-feeding mothers can be absorbed into an infant's system.

Attorneys believe it's the first such case prosecuted in North Dakota.

PSA FROM PETE KOLLER & BUILT ON RESPECT

Built On Respect: A DIY Approach to Helping the World

BECAUSE WHO FALLS ALSEEP WHILE THEIR GETTING THEIR FACE TATTOOED ANYWAY?

Dailymail.co.uk: A teenage girl who claimed 56 stars were tattooed on her face as she slept when she'd only asked for three has admitted she was awake the whole time - and lied because her father was 'furious'.

Belgian Kimberley Vlaminck said last week she woke up in horror to find her face covered in the stars of various sizes which spread out over the left-hand side of her head.

She went on to blame the Flemish-speaking tattooist for not being able to understand her French and English instructions.

Amid a frenzy of media attention, she then vowed to sue tattoo artist Rouslan Toumaniantz for the £9,000 she needs for laser surgery to have them removed.

She said after the tattooing: 'It is terrible for me. I cannot go out on to the street. I look like a freak.'

But the 18-year-old has finally confessed she did not fall asleep, that she wanted all the stars and was 'fully aware' of what Toumaniantz was doing.
Exonerated: Tattoo artist Rouslan Toumaniantz had originally said he would give Vlaminck a refund

Miss Vlaminck told a Dutch TV crew: 'I asked for 56 stars and initially adored them.

'But when my father saw them, he was furious.

'So I said I fell asleep and that the tattoist had made a mistake.'

Toumaniantz - himself covered from head to foot in tattoos and piercings - had consistently denied he had made a mistake and always insisted Vlaminck wanted all 56 stars.

He said at the time: 'I maintain that she absolutely agreed that I tattoo those 56 stars on the left side of her face.'

But despite insisting Vlaminck had asked for 56 stars, he still initially agreed to pay for half of the treatment to remove the tattoos.

He said: 'Kimberley is unhappy and it is not my wish to have an unsatisfied client.

'I don't regret it. To tell you the truth, this has given me some publicity.'

Toumanaintz is now said to have withdrawn his offer and said from now on he will get written consent from clients before he begins tattooing.

CAT-ASTROPHE!

Nampa, Idaho » A southwestern Idaho animal shelter is blaming the dour economy and the annual "kitten season" for filling its cages with about 280 cats and kittens, four times its capacity.

The Canyon County Animal Shelter in Caldwell says cat numbers generally rise in the spring, after amorous felines give birth to a new crop of kittens.

This year, the deluge has been bigger than normal because rising unemployment and the poor economy has put a damper on residents' readiness to adopt.

Susi Hersey, manager of the Canyon County Pet Haven cat shelter in Nampa, says the adoption rate has been unbearably slow.
At the Idaho Humane Society in Boise, numbers of adult cats are on the rise.

SPEAKING OF GLASSJAW

Anyone remember Sons of Abraham? So good.

GCA WEEKEND PREVIEW

We decided that every friday we'll be posting a list of shows/events/fun stuff going on around the city. Not everything will appeal to every single person, but hopefully there will be something going on that you might feel is worth checking out. And if you ever have a suggestion or something you think we should add, drop us a line at grudgecityhc@gmail.com.

FRIDAY - You've worked hard all week, so get out and have fun.

She Rides, Look What I Did, Dismantled and To A Close - Baxter's Cafe (1615 S. State St.), 8 PM, $6 - Dismantled and To A Close are two of Salt Lake's finest local bands at the moment. Expect a great show from both.

The Germs - Burt's Tiki Lounge (21+) - Sure, original vocalist Darby Crash committed suicide in 1980, but everyone else is the same and they're still better than most of the bands that pass as "punk" nowadays.

Smokey Robinson - Red Butte Gardens - I don't care what you say. Smokey Robinson is good.

Gallery Stroll - You've all been to this and you all know exactly what it is. Still a good time.

Year One - Jack Black and Michael Cera are hilarious and Harold Ramis has an excellent track record when it comes to movies.

SATURDAY - Hopefully the rain lets up this weekend, because Saturday is going to be an excellent day to spend outside.

Farmers Market - Pioneer Park - 8 am to 1 pm - There's always good stuff to be found here, and the bums are gone for at least six hours.

Summer of Death - Sears Parking Lot - 4 pm - Stocks are slamming to the ground harder than Jake Brown on the mega-ramp. Chances are you’re getting laid off this summer. There is no better way to kick start the economy than with a skateboard contest. SLUG’s 10th annual Summer of Death Skateboard kicks off on June 20 with a contest for the unemployed. No work just means there’s more time for you to skate, so come join us in the Sear’s parking lot behind Big Deluxe Tattoo on State Street between 700 and 800 south for a chance to win some cash for your fledgling 401k.

Chalk Art Challenge - Gateway - All Day - Some really good, some okay and some downright awful chalk drawings will be displayed on Rio Grande Avenue all day, but it will be the perfect setting for people watching. You know you want to.

Conor Oberst - Main Library - Not quite the second coming of Bob Dylan, but people still like to pretend. He and the Mystic River Band kick off the Arts Festival (that doesn't technically start until next weekend) at the Library.

Reviver and Crooked Ways - The Taylorsville House (5351 S. 3325 W.) 1 pm to 5 pm - Local boys Reviver just returned home from a west coast tour, so go show them how much you missed them.

SUNDAY - It's FATHER'S DAY - Buy your dad something nice.

Brunch - It's delicious and it's the last day of the weekend. Enjoy it. Maybe take your dad.

David Byrne - Red Butte Gardens - The Talking Heads were awesome and David Byrne is still great.

PAINT IT BLACK STREAMING NEW EP AND PLAYING AT MY HOUSE

I returned home a few nights back to find loud noises eminating from my building. I had to push through people to get to my door. Figuring something interesting may be happening, I asked a random punk rock kid what all the ruckus was about.

"Paint It Black and Ceremony are playing... right there." He pointed to the apartment across the hall.

Oh yeah, stream their new record, Amnesia, below.

GIANT SQUID SIGNS TO TRANSLATION LOSS

From Lambgoat -- Translation Loss Records is extremely pleased to announce the signing of San Francisco's Giant Squid. Translation Loss Records will release The Ichthyologist this summer in correlation with the bands summer tour alongside labelmates Grayceon (Translation Loss has a Giant Squid/Grayceon split planned for 2010). Engineered, mixed and produced by Matt Bayles (Mastodon, Pearl Jam), The Ichthyologist was self-released earlier this year by the band as a work in progress and has now been tweaked with parts being completely re-recorded and remixed due to the band's constant strive for perfection from their mastermind/lunatic, Aaron John Gregory. The record will also be repackaged with completely redone/original art by legendary, world-renowned cartoon artist, Sam Kieth (The Maxx, Batman, The Sandman). The band's lineup is rounded out by Jackie Perez Gratz of Amber Asylum/Grayceon, Bryan Ray Beeson and Christopher Melville Lyman. Giant Squid's last record was released via The End Records and the band has since appeared on a tribute to Syd Barrett late last year alongside Pentagram, Kylesa and Jesu.

Christian McKenna from Translation Loss had this to say about the signing: "After floating around with Drew (TL) and Aaron in the Pacific right by Alcatraz collecting mollusks while avoiding sharks and paparazzi for several hours... the three of us decided it was a no brainer to work together. Giant Squid is completely unique to anything going on in heavy music nowadays and we couldn't be happier to be along for the ride."

Visit www.myspace.com/giantsquid to check out the up to date information on the bands upcoming summer tour and current sound clips from The Ichthyologist. New remixed and re-mastered songs from the band's Translation Loss debut will be posted soon.

ED GEIN PLANNING NEW RELEASE

Grind/metal band Ed Gein played its first show in over two years last weekend, and things apparently went very well. Vocalist/bassist Aaron Turner checked in with an update:

"This weekend was amazing from start to finish. I think I speak for all of us in Ed Gein when I say its good to be back! I had an absolute blast despite having a wicked sore throat for a few days and having my voice pretty much go to hell in the first song. Thank you all for the warm welcome back. It was like playing our first show... We were all nervous as hell. But it was also like riding a bike. We're planning to record an EP of songs we wrote two years ago before we decided to take some time off. I'm not exactly sure when we'll be getting in the studio. Jocko at More Sound is always booked way ahead so it'll probably be sometime this fall or early winter. After that we plan to write some more new songs and maybe play a few shows around our area. We have no plans to tour for quite some time, if at all... We don't even have a van at this point. I'll keep everyone updated on things as they come along. Thanks to anyone who still cares what we're up to!"

If you haven't heard this band, get on it. Awesome dudes and an amazing band.

GIRL FALLS ASLEEP, WAKES UP WITH 56 STARS TATTOOED ON HER FACE

Kimberley Vlaminck, 18, claimed that she asked for only three stars to be tattooed near her left eye as a present from her father, Diego, who was upholding a family tradition of tattoos.

"My father wanted to pay because in our family everyone has a tattoo," she said.

As her father ate an ice cream outside, Miss Vlaeminck claims she fell asleep before waking up to find her face covered in the "nightmare" tattoos.

"When he started to tattoo me, I did not feel pain and I fell asleep. I awoke as he tattooed me on the nose and I saw what he had done. I counted 56 stars," she said.

LDS CHURCH TWITTER ACCOUNT HACKED

The hackers changed the password and kept the Deseret News/Mormon Times employees that usually run the site from accessing it. Then, they bombarded the sites followers with 'tweets' like "I already told you all.We do the thinking! You do the obeying!Stop thinking for yourself!Stop studing the history of the church! From Leaders"

It took three days of requests and, ultimately, a legal threat to Twitter before the account was suspended and the anti-Mormon tweets were stopped.

Here's the Channel 4 News report on it.

PIXAR'S JOHN CARTER OF MARS TO BE FILMED IN UTAH

From the Salt Lake Tribune -- First as the planet Vulcan and now the red rocks of Mars, Utah has become Hollywood's destination spot for depicting exotic intergalactic worlds.
Disney and Pixar, makers of classic animated movies such as "Toy Story" and the recent hit "Up," are expected to partly film the pulp science-fiction adventure "John Carter of Mars" in Utah from November to July 2010.
Portions of the Beehive State will double as Mars, including Lake Powell (where the original "Planet of the Apes" was partially filmed), Moab, and Kane and Wayne counties.

DESCENDENTS - READAGE

Influential hardcore punk outfit Descendents are the subject of a new book titled Descendents: Readage available through Punk Trunk Books. The book compiles three decades of essential articles, essays, interviews, and quotes on the hardcore punk band. Orders for the book can be placed here.

Here's the description from the website: DESCENDENTS are arguably the most influential American punk band. With the seminal ‘Milo Goes To College’, the group stood in stark contrast to the posturing of most hardcore bands in 1982. Collecting urgency, melody and humor in a way never heard before, songs like “I’m Not A Loser” and “Catalina” essentially forged the punk/pop genre as we now know it. Reformed in ’85, the band kept plugging away despite a number of line-up changes, making three more albums in just three years. Accumulating an arsenal of classics (“Silly Girl”, “Cheer”, “Sour Grapes,” “Clean Sheets”, “Coolidge”), they called it a day in 1987 but reunited again in 1996 to rock Warped!, plug ‘Everything Sucks’ and score an actual hit (“I’m The One”). Seven years later, Milo came out of the lab for ‘Cool to Be You’. READAGE was compiled in homage to DESCENDENTS: from a fan for the fans. In the words of vocalist Milo Aukerman, ‘Enjoy!’
