NEW MUSIC: OUTLET

Idaho Falls' Outlet posted five new tracks a while back. Give 'em a listen. For fans of Disembodied, Xibalba, Salt Lake Hardcore.

DAN YEMIN AND P.O.S. TO COLLABORATE?

From an interview PastePunk conducted with hip-hopper POS:

Me and Dan Yemin have been talking about collaborating for almost two years now, just because, I met him at the Gainesville Fest a long time ago, and we already known that we were aware of each other through various correspondence via Dillinger Four in Minneapolis.

I named that song "Lifetime…Kid Dynamite" just because the chorus has a reference to Lifetime in it and I just figured it would be a good name for the song and apparently both Dan and Jason are fans of hip-hop, that was cool. I'm hoping me and Dan can collaborate in a big way, I'd like to do more just have him come sing out something or play guitar, I wanna do something big with that guy.

Fur Free Friday
See Below.

FUR FREE FRIDAY/SATURDAY

Friday:

On Fur Free Friday 2009, we will be protesting throughout downtown Park City, Utah. Known as "Black Friday," this is the busiest shopping day of the year and there will be plenty of shoppers in Park City on this day. We will use the occassion, a traditional day of protest against the fur industry, to demonstrate against Park City's multiple fur stores.

Saturday:

The small town of Morgan, Utah is home to more fur farms than any other town in the United States—at least fifteen fur farms are currently operational in Morgan or the surrounding area! The city government itself has deep connections and roots to this industry of cruelty. We plan on marching over a mile through the heart of Morgan to call the state's attention to this pocket of unspeakable suffering in our state. The city and county of Morgan have already drawn battle lines and crafted ordinances intended to interfere with or restrict our protest activities. We will not let their efforts stifle our voices for the thousands and thousands of animals killed every year in Morgan. We will carry on with the march in Morgan.

Visit FurFreeUtah.com for detail.

TONIGHT IN SLC: 11/26/09

It's Thanksgiving, so the activities are few and far between, but there are a few options...

Jazz vs Bulls @ Energy Solutions Arena
This is the first prime time holiday game for the Jazz since 1997. They take on Derrick Rose and the Chicago Bulls at 8:30 tonight. It's also on TNT, so if you don't want to go, tune in at home and watch Charles Barkley. He's probably got a few things to say. More info.

New Movies @ Your Local Theater
A bunch of new movies opened this week, and Thanksgiving night is always a good time to relax and catch a flick. Here's a list of what opened this week. More Info on theaters and showtimes. Links to trailers are below.
Fantastic Mr. Fox
Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day
Ninja Assassin
Old Dogs

ESSENTIAL LISTENING - H20 & ARLO GUTHRIE

No, it's not an epic team-up of hippies and hardcore, just two solid records that you should have in your collection.

Arlo Guthrie's Alice's Restaurant has been a Thanksgiving tradition for my dad since it came out in 1968. If you've never listened to it, give it a shot. It's pretty entertaining.

On the flipside...

H2O's self-titled album is just good old-fashioned fun. Reminds me of fist-pumps and sing-a-longs. Get to it.

HAPPY TU(OFU)RKEY DAY!

What are your plans?

SLEEPING GIANT - TONIGHT AT IN THE VENUE

$20? Find a back door.

FYI:

Epic Promotions (the promoter) is under the banner of Citigroup Entertainment.

Other companies under the Citigroup banner include: 2012 concerts, Ginger Kid Promotions, Wasatch Front Concerts, Club Vegas, V2/LoFi and The Murray Theater.

The Sleeping Giant/Winds of Plague show is the same as all the others that get moved at the last minute. They move the show to a neutral location and tag on a different name to fool people. All the money still goes to the same place.

I love Sleeping Giant as much as the next guy, and by all means support them if you want to. I'm not telling anyone what to do.

If you could care less about any of this, then go to the show, have fun and mosh it up all you want. You can make your own decisions.

But Epic is just the same as all those other companies that everyone claims they won't support. All the money ends up in the same place.

SPRAY PAINT THE WALLS: THE STORY OF BLACK FLAG TO BE RELEASED THIS MONTH

PunkNews.org -- Music publisher Omnibus Press has announced a new book covering the history of hardcore pioneers, Black Flag. The book is titled Spray Paint The Walls: The Story of Black Flag and is due out later this November 2009.

Assembled by Stevie Chick, the book features older interviews with Henry Rollins and Greg Ginn and a new interview with Chuck Dukowski. According to SST Records-affiliated Joe Carducci,
The story, laid out from the band's earliest practices in 1976 to its end ten years later, makes a far more dramatic book than the usual shelf-fillers with their stretch to make the empty stories of various chart-toppers sound exciting and crucial and against the odds.
You can find more information here.

MEMBERS OF ANTHRAX, FALL OUT BOY AND EVERYTIME I DIE FORM SIDE PROJECT, THE DAMNED THINGS

Blabbermouth.net -- U.K.'s Rock Sound magazine reported earlier today (note: the article has since been removed from the web site) that members of Fall Out Boy, Every Time I Die and Anthrax have teamed up to form the metal side-project The Damned Things.

The band is said to include Fall Out Boy guitarist Joe Trohman and drummer Andy Hurley; Every Time I Die vocalist Keith Buckley and Anthrax guitarists Scott Ian and Rob Caggiano. The group, whose lineup is rounded out by bassist David Karon, has reportedly written more than 15 songs and plans to hit the studio before Christmas to begin recording its debut album.

Trohman reportedly stated about The Damned Things: "Scott's right hand is the reason I got into playing punk rock, hardcore and metal! Having Keith as part of the mix is insane, we all know he writes incredible lyrics but he is also a really good singer. That is showcased in Every Time I Die, but we want him to go more into singing than screaming on this project."

ESSENTIAL LISTENING: INFEST - SLAVE

Infest's influence cannot be understated. While often credited as the forefathers of the "power violence" genre, the brutality of records like "Slave" has influenced bands in every corner of the punk-hardcore-metal world. Bottomline: Infest took hardcore to a level of abrasiveness and disgust unseen before their formation.

FREE DOWNLOAD COURTESY OF DEAD ICONS

Dead Icons recently sent us 6 tracks to share with you all. The songs come from their split with Unrestrained that came out over the summer. Dead Icons will be playing December 1st with Touche Amore in Ogden @ The Basement. Good stuff, check it out...I mean who can turn down free music.

Download it here.

ESSENTIAL LISTENING - REFUSED - SONGS TO FAN THE FLAMES OF DISCONTENT

Refused was one of the most influential punk/hardcore bands of the late 90s and Songs To Fan The Flames of Discontent is arguably their finest release. While it may not be as popular or as well-known as their seminal album The Shape of Punk to Come, it shows that the band never strayed from the path they were on in the beginning, with strong political opinions and chants of anarchy on full display. Not to mention that it contains some of the best, straight-forward hardcore songs of the era. Songs To Fan The Flame of Discontent was the first step Refused took towards the revolution.

POLLS CLOSED: DO YOU GO TO SHOWS?

51 of you make it out to shows when you can. Considering how many people over the age of 21 still go to shows in SLC, this makes a lot of sense. With family, school and/or work, it's hard to catch every show. 15 are so die-hard that you "wouldn't miss a one." Thanks for keeping the spirit alive!

12 don't go to shows but would like to... hopefully we can keep you up-to-date and you can make it out sooner or later. I bet you'll have a good time.

And 15 of you are "over it." You voyeurs you! We appreciate your peeping-tom interest in Salt Lake hardcore... but this is hardcore! This about getting together to enjoy the music you love, vent your frustration with this fucked-up world, and build a better future. What is hardcore without the stage dives and high fives?

So here's the question: Why did you vote the way you did? Why do you make it to every show? Why are your over it? What keeps you from going to shows and what would get you out to me?

Let us know in the comments...

WESTBORO BAPTIST CHURCH TARGETS POP PUNK BAND, ALL TIME LOW

AltPress.com -- Westboro Baptist Church, an independent organization known for its radical anti-homosexual views, has apparently set its sites on All Time Low. In their extensive protest schedule, members of the WBC are planning to picket outside of ATL's Dec. 6 show at the Electric Factory in Philadelphia.

The explanation for the protest on "Godhatesfags.com" references an Altpress.com news brief and reads in part:

"All Time Low frontman suffers concussion' so says the bloggers and Alternative Press reporter. You may be wondering what in the world WBC cares about these losers - so let me break it down for you. How do you know how far gone a society is? You look at their social icons. When you look at these gender-confused, haphazard freakazoids then you can plainly see that america is DOOMED, for real! This is the final generation, and a little concussion is the least of their worries. Here is what they have to look forward to when this once great nation finally falls - for her fall is already started."

A WBC member tweeted to ATL frontman Alex Gaskarth that "God Hates Fag Enablers! WBC will picket All Time Low's concert in Philly." Gaskarth replied, "Stay home. Intolerance isn't welcome at our show."

CEREMONY WRITING NEW RECORD

Ceremony recently began work on their third full-length. The effort is expected to surface next spring via Bridge Nine Records. According to the group, "We've been kinda quiet about it. It sounds pretty cool."

CROWBAR - LIVE IN NEW ORLEANS

EX-FURIOUS STLYES MEMBERS NOT HAPPY WITH 'SEATTLE COP KILLER' SHIRT

PunkNews.org  -- Former Furious Styles members Miles Freeborn, Tony Reed, and Harris Richardson have spoken out against a t-shirt glorifying the recent killing of a Seattle police officer. All three have blamed vocalist Mike Torres for the shirt's creation, stating that they had no input into the shirt's creation and that if they had, the shirt would never have been released.
It was not politically relevant or righteous. It was a brutal attack by an unorganized, deranged imbecile. We are sickened by the shirt's message and the fact that it now represents Furious Styles. The shirt was created solely by Mike Torres without any consent of ours.
Freeborn was also quick to note that the band has actually been broken up for 6 months and that photos of the band that have been circulating with the controversy depict members who had not been in the band for several years. Richardson also noted that in the two years he was a member of the band, their music did not have an overt political message and that the anti-cop sentiment behind the shirt was not something that he, Freeborn, and Reed shared.
"It's not like [Monfort] was a political activist. He...wanted to be a cop. He's not really standing up against cops. It's not like we're talking about Mumia or anything."
The three plan to put a stop to the shirt's distribution.

Stay tuned to PunkNews.org for continued coverage.

The Dutchess & The Duke at Kilby Court & Urban Lounge

FURIOUS STYLES RELEASES CONTROVERSIAL T-SHIRT

Seattle's Furious Styles recently released a t-shirt that refers to the alleged killer of a police officer as a "hero." Officer Timothy Brenton was sitting in his car on Halloween, when a car pulled up next to him, and opened fired. The suspect, Christopher J. Monfort, was shot several days later in an altercation with police, leaving him paralyzed.

Frontman Michael Torres had this to say:
Over the last week, I saw a lot of support for this dead officer, and a lot people who allegedly hate the police putting their opinions aside in the wake of this supposed "tragedy". That doesn't excuse the actions of police in general and I refuse to change my opinion on the subject. When police die, I feel that the streets are just a little bit safer. So with that being said, I'm in no way embarrassed that we made this shirt. A lot of people took a stance on the situation....now I'm taking mine.

ESSENTIAL LISTENING - DEADGUY - FIXATION ON A COWORKER

One of the most underrated but extremely influential bands from the mid-90s Victory Records stable had to be Deadguy. The band only released one proper full length, but it is widely regarded as one of the best hardcore releases of the 90s. Later, more popular, bands like Botch learned a great deal from Deadguy and you owe it to yourself to listen to this band.

DEE SNYDER WANTS TO RECLAIM THE METAL HORNS

Oh, Dee Snyder.

Good luck with this. You're probably going to need it.

From the Take Back The Horns mission statement -- Calling all true headbangers! Join the fight! It’s time to take back that which is rightfully ours and return “the Metal Horns” to their one true home and former metal glory!

I first became conscious of the misuse of the “Metal Horns” when I read a article a few years ago in the brilliant, sarcastic, fictitious, weekly newspaper “The Onion”. It was entitled “Metal Council Convenes To Discuss 'Metal Hand Sign' Abuse” and it was a hysterical send up on how it seemed everyone was “throwing the Metal Horns” and for all the wrong reasons. I remember laughing and thinking to myself, “Yeah, there really are a lot of people using the horns these days.” But that was the end of it.

Head over to the home site to finish reading.
