POLL: FAVORITE VENUE OF THE 00s?

So many memories get tied to venues. Looking back at the end of the first decade of this new millenium, we're wondering... where did you make yours?

This list is made up of venues that held more than a handful of shows during the 00s and focuses on those where hardcore shows were all-ages, not-for-profit and booked by actual hardcore kids.

Feel free to write others into the comments. And while you're at it, why not share some of those treasured memories from these icons of Salt Lake Hardcore History:

DV8
Wagstaff
Albee Square
The Junction(s)
Kilby Court
Undergrounds
Uprok
Wild Mushroom
Vortex
Artopia
Baxters

TOP 5 OF 2009 - PART 2

SLHC MUSIC ARCHIVE: SALT LAKE CITY HARDCORE - THE WAY IT IS

In 1988, Revelation Records released a compilation called New York Hardcore - The Way It Is. 17 tracks from 12 of the best hardcore bands around at the time—and they all happened to be from the New York City area. Sick of it All, Gorilla Biscuits and Warzone were all featured and it became an instant classic.

In 2005, Rob Lovell (of Skeiff D'Bargg fame) came up with an idea. He wanted to get 12 bands from Salt Lake City together and recreate that compilation. He booked a week of studio time with Andy Patterson, recruited some of his favorite locals and gave them all homework assignments. By the end of the week, every track had been recorded and it seemed a release was just around the corner.

Only a release date never came. One thing led to another and the whole thing kept getting pushed back again and again. Eventually, Rob moved to Washington and the whole thing was forgotten. A few of the tracks surfaced here and there, but it was never heard in its entirety.

Fortunately, Andy still had it sitting on one of his old hard drives, gave it a quick master, sent it our way and Rob gave us his blessing to release his brainchild to the world. So here it is, in all its glory.

12 Salt Lake bands—ranging from punk to hardcore to hip hop—including Aftermath of a Trainwreck, Tamerlane, Parallax, Skeiff D'Bargg and many others covering classic NYHC anthems.

WE NEED YOUR HELP WITH THE MUSIC ARCHIVE!!!

The Music Archive seems like it's a big hit and we're happy that people are digging it. The only problem is that it's not big enough!

There's still tons of music out there that we never got, lost somewhere or just don't know how to get a hold of. I've seen a lot of people asking us to add stuff, but we don't have a lot of it. If you do, send it to us! We'd love to hear it ourselves and share it with the world.

What we need is for you to create a file with the band name and album title (if it's simply a demo, just label it as such) and the track titles. If you know the year add that in there as well. Then make a ZIP file or an RAR file and send it to us at this address.

saltlakehardcorearchive@gmail.com

This email address is only for music. I'll be checking it every couple of days hoping to get more awesome stuff to add. If the file is already hosted on something like mediafire (i.e. rapidshare, etc.) send us the link so we can get it from there.

We want to make this archive as big as we can, so help us out!

MERRY XXX-MAS FROM GRUDGE CITY ACTIVITIES!

Hopefully everyone is having a good time with friends and family today (I know we are) but we just wanted to give everyone a little bit of a Christmas gift of our own.

A few of you have noticed already, but the Salt Lake Hardcore Music Archive (there's a link for it over in the right hand column) is up and running. Dan and I have been quietly adding music to it for the past week and will continue to do so for the next little while. There's nearly 30 years (!) of great Salt Lake Hardcore music out there and we wanted to make sure everyone that wanted to hear it would be able to.

We'll still be highlighting one release from the archive every Wednesday, but figured rather than the slow burn of only giving you one a week, we'd overload your senses all at once.

There are a lot of demos and unreleased tracks that maybe fell by the wayside over the years, so we decided that an archive would be a great place to keep track of it all.

And as we move forward and the rest of the Salt Lake Hardcore 101's take shape, you'll be able to learn a bit more about the bands that you may not recognize—like Dead in the Womb, Anima Nera or Dead Peasants Insurance.

But for now, head over to the Archive and download an album or 40. We'll keep adding to it as we go, so check back often.

Thanks for supporting us, now get over and get some free music!

*We still have a lot of music to upload and there's some that we don't have, so if you'd like to have your band added to the archive, shoot us an e-mail at grudgecityhc@gmail.com and we'll get a copy from you to add.

SLHC MUSIC ARCHIVE: CHEREM - VEGAN POWER (demo)

In early May of 2001, Cherem got together in an unfinished basement to try their hand at the recording. We only had a 4-track CD recorder, a few microphones and a very little knowledge. But we were able to capture the four songs that we were most proud of as a band (sadly, "Die at 55" did not fall into that category) and the result was the Vegan Power demo that was only released in limited quantity at Cherem shows the following summer.

Two of the four songs eventually ended up on In the Land of the Dead and We Are the Revolution ("Slit Wrist of Humanity" and "As the Truth Unfolds" respectively) and the lyrics for another were used elsewhere ("Eyes Sewn Shut"), there was a fourth song that never lived beyond the demo (called "Green Rage").

If you're interested in hearing what the early days of Cherem sounded like (when Thom Green of Sleeping Giant played drums) then check out the demo. The recording quality is terrible, but that's what basement demo's are for.

MAXIMUM PENALTY RELEASES MUSIC VIDEO

Very, very NYHC.

ONE VOICE: MIKE TURLEY

Mike Turley is best known as the singer of XReflectX. His band carried the dark, passionate sound of Salt Lake Hardcore into the late 2000s and introduced a whole new generation to the hardcore scene.  Mike is also a talented artist (see the cover of his band's swansong full-length, The Hourglass End). Sadly, XReflectX retired this year but Mike remains passionate about hardcore and the world eagerly awaits his next endeavor.

How were you introduced to the Salt Lake Hardcore scene?

Through some of my closest friends I was shown certain bands and given the idea of going to a hardcore show. When I was 15 years old, I went to my first show at The Junction with Bad Luck 13 and I've kept going since.

What are your greatest SLHC memories?

I feel somewhat privileged to be able to have some of my closest friends also being a part of the hardcore scene. I have so many great memories of fun shows and times with Reflect and such. Like when we recorded our demo, we had no clue what we were doing and some stuff had to be rewritten and broken back down. It was funny but a total nightmare for any recording engineer. Probably one of my favorite shows was when all of our bands went out to California and played the Coming of Age Fest. Although it was lacking in attendance, it was a really good time. All the bands played great and it was a good experience.

Who are your favorite SLHC bands?

Pushing Up Daisies is definitely one of my all time favorites because of the stage presence they had and the musical style they introduced me to. Tamerlane, of course, for the time they've put into sticking around and the emotion and anger pushed out of the songs they produce.

How has hardcore and the Salt Lake scene impacted your life?

My appreciation for music was something I felt was never fully understood until i started listening to underground music like hip hop and hardcore/punk, and im glad for it. The people i've met and the lives that have touched me and my friends in the scene have made a huge impact on me as a person. Its honestly like an extended family.

What are your thoughts on the state of hardcore today and its future?

I feel like its a struggle in this time -- where hardcore has become so mainstream and such a money grubbing match -- to find decent people that can put on a traditional diy style hardcore show. I mean the majority of hxc bands nowadays don't even do their own booking for tours, which i mean isn't a big deal but lessens the point of the diy style of it all. That's something i totally respect about bands that take the time in doing so. The future of hardcore i think is slightly uncertain. I dont feel like shows are promoted well enough anymore outside of the internet. People need to understand that we as a whole need to do what we can to make this all work and not just the small minority of people that run a website or play in a band... every person that attends these shows through one way or another.

NEW MUSIC: GLACIAL

Currently-inactive rockers, Glacial (Ex-Lifeless/Pushing Up Daises, Current-Tamerlane/Black Sleep of Kali), have posted five unreleased songs plus "Behind Your Bead" from the GCA Mixtape for download. Get at 'em here!

RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE PERFORMS ON BRITISH TALK RADIO, OFFENDS MANY

Apparently some Rage Against the Machine fans in the U.K. have launched a grassroots, internet campaign to lift Rage's 1992 single, "Killing in the Name," to the number one spot on the country's pop charts.

And it's working pretty well. Rage Against the Machine is donating the proceeds from the rise in sales to charity group Raised for Shelter and they've already received over 42,000 pounds. The band recently guest starred on BBC Radio's morning breakfast show to perform said track and proceeded to offend many. It gets intense at 8:45, but listen to the whole thing because it rules.
