SALT LAKE HARDCORE 101: MOSHALICIOUS
"Heroes get remembered, but legends never die."
That statement sums up the short-lived, yet prolific career of Moshalicious.
Made up of a virtual all-star Salt Lake City line-up, the group was comprised of former and current members of Opened Up, Cherem, Aftermath of a Trainwreck, Sleeping Giant and Tamerlane. The goal of the band was simple: live up to the name.
And live up to the name they did. Taking inspiration from the band Bad Luck 13, the group got together one evening in the early fall of 2001 to write one epic song that would move crowds from front to back and side to side. They wanted all hell to break loose.
The only show the band ever played was at a small coffee shop called Undergroundz. It was a surprise set that everyone knew would come eventually. There had been too much talk and too many rumors swirling that everyone that regularly attended a hardcore show that summer knew it was bound to happen sooner or later.
The show carried along fine, until a drifter appeared in front of the coffee shop eager to tell tales and bask in the attention usually only reserved for sideshow freaks. The vagrant produced a dildo and bottle of toothpaste and proceeded to brush his teeth on the sidewalk for all to see. He then stormed inside and preformed a one man show that would later be referred to as "The Undercover Cop." Every eye was fixated as he waved his hands in the air and moved about the room and yelled for all to hear. When he was finished, he took a bow, yet no one clapped. The crowd was too stunned and unsure of what they had just witnessed.
But it was nothing compared to what they were about to see.
In the back of the coffee shop, Compilate had graciously (but foolishly) allowed the members of Moshalicious to borrow their equipment—because a sneak attack cannot be done properly if the band is forced to bring their own—and the stage was set.
The seven men, all donning masks and hooded sweatshirts launched into their first, last and only song, "Friends Don't Let Friends Fight Alone" and unleashed the fury.
Very few lyrics were actually audible as the three vocalists stormed the room, dancing with bats and dodged pieces of cinder block flying through the air. One bat became tangled in guitar chords and during a rather impressive spin-move, a vintage effects pedal was hurled through the audience, connecting with and breaking the thumb of the very man that had been kind enough to loan it out. As that happened, the guitarist became enraged and took to the dance floor himself, swinging the guitar above his head, daring anyone to get in the way.
When the song ended, not a single person clapped. The silence was deafening and no one was quite sure what had just happened, but they all knew they had witnessed something special.
Sadly, the only video footage of the show was destroyed and Moshalicious was never seen again, yet the legend lives on.

SLEEPING GIANT - TONIGHT AT IN THE VENUE
$20? Find a back door.
FYI:
Epic Promotions (the promoter) is under the banner of Citigroup Entertainment.
Other companies under the Citigroup banner include: 2012 concerts, Ginger Kid Promotions, Wasatch Front Concerts, Club Vegas, V2/LoFi and The Murray Theater.
The Sleeping Giant/Winds of Plague show is the same as all the others that get moved at the last minute. They move the show to a neutral location and tag on a different name to fool people. All the money still goes to the same place.
I love Sleeping Giant as much as the next guy, and by all means support them if you want to. I'm not telling anyone what to do.
If you could care less about any of this, then go to the show, have fun and mosh it up all you want. You can make your own decisions.
But Epic is just the same as all those other companies that everyone claims they won't support. All the money ends up in the same place.

SLEEPING GIANT - "ARMY OF THE CHOSEN ONE" VIDEO PREMIERE
Noisecreep.com has the video and an interview with singer, Tom Green.
"Green explained that the video accurately captures the essence of the song. 'The message in the song is essentially that it's a callout to all of the people that are part of our generation, young and old, not to be lulled to sleep by sort of the circumstances and disappointments and business and all of the cares and worries that surround our life,' Green said."

TODD FROM STARKWEATHER SAYS THANK YOU

It was 40 insane hours. It was 2 time zones. It was 4 flights. It was one of the best shows Starkweather has ever played. It was one of the best shows ever because of you, not us. We were ragged, we fucked up, we were exhausted in sick from the altitude, but we were also given the opportunity to play in front of people that cared about us, people that felt, on a visceral level, what Starkweather was and still is about. There are the obvious thank you's; Nate for risking putting his money on the line, there was Clint who kept things organized on our end, Casey who apparently hatched this whole fucked up scheme, Trevor and the kind guys in Tamerlane who loaned us there gear, Jack for his bitter humor and for being the only only straight up thug looking motherfucker to ever have Nietsche tattoed on his neck, Mike for shuttling us from the airport to our hotel and for the kind words he shared with me, Brook from Este for his hospitality, Slug Magazine, the City Weekly, my brother Colin for the hotel rooms, food, travel expertise, and calm 'American Psycho' like demeanor, Mister Murren for properly representing da Bronx, and last but definitely not least, Jan Vermeerbergen for making the trip from Antwerp, Belgium, for being the ONLY guy who could get Starkweather to Europe, for putting out the amazing 'Croatoan' vinyl, and for providing endless humor when things got tense.
Not so obvious thank you's:
Every single person that walked through the door at Club Sound. You, and not us, made this show the success and amazing memory that it was. You made sure that Nate made his money back, made us feel like family, and whether you stayed for our set or not, you made us feel like the 20 year olds that we haven't been for a long time.
The Mormon Church for making it feel not so wrong to want to bang very young girls.
The Red Iguana for serving up the best fucking Mexican food I've ever had.
Pat the van driver, Club Sound and their soundman, xReflectx, and Sleeping Giant for bringing their sizable followings and for rocking the fucking house
ONE WEEK AND TWO MORNINGS AFTER: STARKWEATHER
Thank you to Starkweather for coming all the way out west. I'm confident I'm speaking for many when I say I never thought I would see you perform and the show far surpassed my highest expectations.
We should all be thankful for Tamerlane, Sleeping Giant and XReflectX--three examples of the amazing talent and dedication that Salt Lake City has to offer.
And finally, many thanks to Slug Magazine, City Weekly, Red Pulse Magazine, Club Sound, Este Pizza, Greywhale Music and anyone who helped spread the word about the show by tacking up flyers, posting online bulletins or telling friends.
All that can be said about the show is that each of the
Videos and pictures will be posted for weeks to come, including an interview with Starkweather. These will give a much better picture of the evening than some hazy recap. Find pictures at the GCA Photo Archive and videos at the GCA Video Archive.

THE MORNING AFTER : SLEEPING GIANT
Ten bands played. Most saw only one: Sleeping Giant.
This was Thom Green & company's third appearance in Salt Lake and anyone who knew anything about the band knew the show would be out of control. What no one expected was that Sleeping Giant could be upstaged in Thom's own hometown.
A video interview with Green and live footage from the show will be up in the next few days. Pictures are up now at the GCA Photo Archive.
But as for the show, we'll let the mystery show stealer do the talking...

In other news, it's a good thing shows are on the come up so people can pick up apparel from bands that aren't made up of beer pounding bros and internet pedophiles.

SCREAM FOR LIFE OF AGONY COVERS
You may remember Thom Green from the early days of Cherem and Deathstar. Or for providing excellent financial management services at the Sugar House Wells Fargo Bank. Or simply for being the swell guy that he is.But his latest endeavor, Sleeping Giant, needs no introduction in SLC. Love or hate the band's Christian message, cutting-edge merch designs or striking good looks, the Giant is made up of excellent people playing excellent music.
They've been on tour the entire stummer but will be gracing Salt Lake JULY 19 with the Scream the Prayer tour.
Studio 600 (26 East 600 South) - Show starts 4 p.m. - Tickets at the door or from SmithsTIX - No Excuses.
