25 BEST PUNK ROCK LOGOS

Yahoo Music has devised a list of the 25 Best Punk Rock Logos of all time and the top three are pretty obvious.

1. Black Flag -- Black Flag guitarist Greg Ginn's brother Raymond Ginn (AKA Raymond Pettibon) is responsible for the vast majority of Black Flag album covers. His artwork has a very distinctive off-kilter comic book style, and it was Raymond who suggested the name "Black Flag" when the group decided to change their name from "Panic" in 1977. He also designed the simple 4 black bar graphic that would become the band's logo. The image's simplicity made it possible for fans to easily reproduce it freehand or with stencils. The logo quickly spread on clothing, sneakers, school notebooks and as graffiti, eventually becoming one of the most recognizable punk rock images in history.

2. Dead Kennedys -- The Dead Kennedys famous "DK" logo was created by Winston Smith from sketches provided by Jello Biafra. When Jello was asked about the logo in a 2006 interview, he explained, "...I wanted to make sure it was something simple and easy to spray-paint so people would graffiti it all over the place, and then I showed it to Winston Smith. He played around with it, came back with a bunch of designs that had the circle and slightly 3-D looking letters and he had ones with different patterns behind it. I liked the one with bricks, but ultimately I thought simple red behind it was the boldest and the best." Whatever Jello's reasoning, it worked. The "DK" logo became an icon and many would argue that this logo should beat out Black Flag for the number one spot.

3. Misfits -- The Misfits' famous skull logo first appeared on the band's "Horror Business" single. The image was lifted by Glenn Danzig and Jerry Only from a poster for the 1946 film The Crimson Ghost. Although not many people alive today would remember the film, the Misfits helped make this skull image one of the most recognizable in rock & roll, which is rife with skull imagery. What makes the image stand out in my opinion are the eyes. A skull does not contain eyes within the orbits, but this image adds a drug-induced undercurrent by adding lazy eye slits, this brings the image to life and adds an extra layer of creepiness.

SALT LAKE CITY RANKS AMONG MOST FAMILY FRIENDLY CITIES - RIGHT UP THERE WITH...

When the Deseret News reported on a Forbes.com list that ranked the best and worst cities for families, it probably came as no surprise to learn that Salt Lake City was high in the rankings.

But, strangely Salt Lake is right alongside... Detroit and Baltimore?

The article states - "The analysis of the 40 largest cities in America compared the median income there with a "no-frills budget" for a family of two parents and two children.

On average, Salt Lakers spend just 68 percent of their $64,400 median income on necessary expenses. Residents of Detroit, Baltimore and San Francisco also spend 68 percent of their incomes on family budgets, according to Forbes.

That leaves those cities with more spending cash than every other American city outside San Jose, Calif., which topped the list with a median income of $100,000.

At the other end of the list, New Yorkers, New Orleanians and Los Angelenos spend 90 percent or more of their income on necessary expenses, Forbes reports."

Good thing they're going on spending here, because numbers 1 and 3 on the list of most dangerous cities in the U.S. are... Detroit and Baltimore.

AT BOTH ENDS ZINE ANNOUNCES FINAL ISSUE

From Steve Fallis -- At Both Ends zine has been pretty quiet over the past few years but coming this fall will be a final issue. This is something special I’ve been planning for a while; it’s going to be really cool so hopefully you’ll dig it.

This thing is going to be a monster in the 160-page range with full colour covers on some nice, coated paper. Expect something really slick. Some of the major articles will include Sick Of It All, Bane, Shai Hulud, Shook Ones, Greg Bennick, Anchor, To Kill, and Wait In Vain, and a ton more. There’s just too much content to list here.

Every zine will come with a double 7” compilation; each band listed will contribute two brand new songs (which we wrote about earlier today).
-Grade: A brand new recording from 4 original members of one of Canada's best. They’ve been broken up for seven years but are back in the studio recording specifically for this.
-Bane: Their first new recording since The Note was released four years ago.
-Between Earth And Sky: Greg Bennick of Trial’s new band along with members of Strain and By A Thread.
-Unrestrained: From Portland, OR. Includes former members of Desperate Measures, Pulling Teeth, and The Dead Unknown.

ONR 002 - UP RIVER

It took a long time, but I finally got it. There's a small issue with the tracking (two of the songs run together in one track, so there's only six instead of the seven listed on the back), but that kind of thing is bound to happen when you're dealing with a band that is now sprawled out across three states.

Either way, I've got them and I will have them at the Unrestrained/Parasitic Skies show next Thursday, July 9.
