SICK OF IT ALL GETS VINYL REISSUES

More vinyl reissues on the way, this time through Reflections Records.

The label has announced plans to reissue the first two LP's from seminal New York hardcore band Sick of it All. Blood, Sweat and No Tears and Just Look Around will feature the original artwork but will be packaged in a gatefold sleeve and limited to 500 copies.

I've never been big on record collecting (I already have too many comics I don't have room for, I don't need any more hobbies) but I know a lot of people out there do.

What are your thoughts on the vinyl resurgence and how does it affect your collection?

Wow, what a slow couple of days.

We looked over all the comments from the What Do You Want To See? post a couple of weeks back and there were a lot of good ones. Thanks for those.

We've been doing a little behind-the-scenes work and a lot of those ideas were brought up and expanded upon.

The Salt Lake Hardcore 101's (over there to the right) will be on an extended hiatus as we wait to hear back from people involved in the bands. I want to make them as awesome and informative as possible and have interviews in to a lot of people. Once we get a few responses, we'll start back up again with 101's on Triphammer, Clear, Pushing Up Daisies, Tempered, Lyndal Control, Deadfall, 78 Days After Death and as many more as we can.

One Voice will also be taking a little hiatus as we wait to hear back from more people. We sent the questions out to another round of people a few weeks ago and still haven't heard back from some of the people we contacted the first time. Those are coming, though. Unfortunately, that column is at the mercy of the availability and dedication of others. We just have to play the waiting game.

Essential Listening fell off a little the past couple of weeks, but we have no excuse for why. We'll have that back up and running this week. Meanwhile, you can click the Essential Listening link to see if there's anything you missed.

I'm working on setting up interviews with a lot of current local bands and hope to feature video interviews with them once or twice a month. Look for that to start up fairly soon. I'm hoping to get three recorded this week and edited, published and posted within the next little bit.

TWO SHOWS TONIGHT! TAKE YOUR PICK!

Another lazy Sunday? Not quite. There are two great shows happening tonight, so get off the couch and catch one of them.

H2O CELEBRATES 15 YEARS IN THE GAME AT NYC'S GRAMERCY THEATRE - 02-20-10

Tonight I ordered a slice of pizza from my favorite pie spot in the East Village. I had every intention of chowing down and catching the L Train back to Brooklyn for a good night's rest after a long work week. I looked at my iPhone to check the time: 8:30 p.m. The calendar icon displayed a big black 20. "Hmm," I thought to myself, "I swear I had something planned for the 20th."

"Vegan Picante!" shouted the friendly pizza guy. I grabbed my slice, thanked the man and walked over to Viva Herbal's humble fixins station. "The 20th," I thought again, "what was I gonna do on the 20th?" As I poured dried peppers over my slice, I realized that I'd need some water and then it hit me: H20! Tonight was H2O's 15th-anniversary show -- one of my favorite bands! I looked up the venue, Gramercy Theatre, and headed north on 3rd Avenue at a rapid pace -- well as rapid as I could muster with a slice of hot pizza in my hand.

I turned left on 23rd street and was greeted by a giant marquee reading: H20's 15th Anniversary... SOLD OUT. No sooner could the despair set in then I bumped -- literally -- into a scalper. "You need a ticket?" 

"Yes."

When I entered the Gramercy -- fingers crossed that I'd bought a legit ticket -- Maximum Penalty was halfway through their set. (I kept an eye on the scalper until the door guy scanned my ticket and let me in.) With 23 years of New York Hardcore beneath their belts, Max Pen has it dialed. I admit I don't know the band's entire catalog, but I've always appreciated their mix of stompy Big Apple riffs with the sporadic Dr. Know-ish wails. When they wrapped up, I grabbed a spot in the movie-theater seating that lines the back of the Gramercy. 

The lights dimmed. "We're Trapped Under Ice." I've heard Trapped Under Ice, but I haven't had a chance to see them live.  I liked their music alright. I'm pleased to say that TUI is one of those bands whose sound really makes sense when you experience it live -- so much energy from these five Baltimore-ites. 

The only way I can think to describe TUI's sound is by asking you to imagine your favorite New York Hardcore song. Got it? Now fast forward to the part where the breakdown's about to begin, you know, the part that makes you say, "OH SHIT!" Now take that section and loop it in your head for 30 minutes, over and over. That's something like a TUI set. Pure "OH SHIT" recklessness. Will be seeing this band again.

In New York City, it's hard to go a day without hearing Jay Z's "Empire State of Mind." It's that song with the Alicia Keys R&B hooks that wails, "New York,...concrete jungle where dreams are made of..." Radio stations practically play the thing on repeat. High School girls blast it through iPhone speakers on the subway. For some odd reason, cabbies love the track. You can't get the damn thing out of your head because you can't physically get ten feet away from it. 

 

Anyway, after about 30 minutes of NYHC on the P.A., "Empire State of Mind" came on, and it came on loud. The lights dimmed. At the end of the hook, Frank Sinatra's voice crooned in, "It's up to you, New York." The opening octaves of H2O's "1995" rang out... 

I could try to explain how epic H20's set was, but I wouldn't do it justice. Plus, poorly-recorded iPhone video footage is way more legit:  

 

NEW MUSIC: REVIVER!

We reported a while back that Reviver will be joining dozens of hardcore bands -- This is Hell, Touche Amore and Final Fight to name a few -- in support of same-sex marriage on the Enough is Enough compilation.

From B9: Things over at the Bridge Nine Records have been busy this winter and we are proud and excited to announce the release of NYHC legends Underdog discography titled "Matchless." Set to hit stores on May 18th, 2010, this comprehensive release will include both "The Vanishing Point" and the Demos on CD/double LP. Bassist Russ Iglay said, "This release has been a long time coming. We're glad that it's going to see the light of day this Spring on Bridge Nine and we can't wait to get out there and play more shows this year!" Buzz has been re-building around the band since their performance at last year's Burning Fight show in Chicago - expect to see Underdog on the road this summer in support of this release.

UTAH NEWS BLURB: HJR 12 GOES TO VOTE TOMORROW

This is not hardcore news -- except in a Green-Rage-Eco-Justice sense, I guess, maybe.. It's a pressing matter for Utahns no less.

HJR 12 is a bill going to vote in the Utah Senate tomorrow that, if passed, will ask the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to halt its carbon reduction initiatives. Basically, a handful of politicians are deciding that Utah residents deny climate science based on nothing but their own backwoods opinions and plan to report this to the nation. If you aren't comfortable with politicians putting words in your mouth, you can find more info on my personal blog.

PURIFICATION SIGNS WITH BURNING SEASON, RECORDS NEW TRACKS

We heard a little about this a few months back, but now our friends over at xSTUCK IN THE PASTx have a whole bunch of new info, straight from the band.

xSITPx -- Austrian label Burning Season Records is going to reissue Purification’s masterpiece Banging the Drums of War (previously released by Uprising Records). The new version of the cd will include 2 brand new tracks that the band is going to record in the upcoming weeks.

Former guitar player and main composer of Purification, Andrea "Monster" Campanelli, had the following to say about the deal with Burning Season Records:

"As a veteran of the scene myself (i'm 36 yo) i'm honoured and very proud to work with Pat, owner of BSR,because he always managed buisness with ethics, releasing lot of bands with a positive message and never following the "next big thing" or the new trends in hxc.

I'm looking forward to a great partnership btw Purification and Burning Seasons Records, we feel like we found the best home possible for the band right now!"

Purification’s Reunion tour is scheduled for July/August 2010 and will see the band appearing at some of the most important hxc summer festivals.

(No word on whether or not this means they'll be heading across the pond to see us, though)

SLHC MUSIC ARCHIVE: THE LAZARUS PROJECT - THERE IS NO CURE

(*We missed the SLHC Archive post again yesterday. Sorry*)

Just about the time that Clear and Triphammer were ending their runs at the top of the Salt Lake Hardcore scene and before bands like 78 Days After Death or Compilate began turning heads, The Lazarus Project sat alone as the best-known band in Salt Lake.

Made up of prior members of both Climb and the aforementioned Triphammer, their shows were the stuff that late-90s hardcore shows were known for—chaos, excitement and a whole lot of fun (the most memorable was probably at the American Fork VFW with Clear and Undying, which if anyone has video of that, we'd love to see).

They were poised to be the next big thing out of Salt Lake when the All Shall Be Infected demo started making the rounds. They played a number of west coast shows and eventually released an 8-song EP for Breakout Records called There Is No Cure. It was a well received batch of songs that were the epitome of the bruising sound Salt Lake had become known for throughout the 90s.

The band broke up shortly after its release and never quite lived up to the promise they showed—which is, sadly, the case for most bands from this city.

REVIVER HITTING THE ROAD WITH A BETTER HOPE FOUNDATION

Salt Lake's own Reviver and California's A Better Hope Foundation are hitting the together from March 21-29. They'll swing through Ogden to play The Basement on the 22nd. Don't miss it!

We've been talking about touring together with ABHF for a couple years now almost . But both our bands are touring so much so it's hard to work around each other's schedules. We just played with them the first time in Denver on our last tour and it was a great time. So we're pretty excited about doing more with them.

BAD BLOOD BETWEEN NFG'S CHAD GILBERT AND SAY ANYTHING'S MAX BEMIS

Here's the scoop: Bemis claimed that Gilbert (Shai Hulud, New Found Glory) wrote a song for his new solo project, What's Eating Gilbert, about how his ex-girlfriend/Bemis' current wife, didn't like hardcore music or his friends from the hardcore scene:

I tried to take her out to hang with the people I know and she never ever wanted to go. Not in a sweet sort of timid sort of way, more a judgemental sort of stuck up sort of way. She said I don’t understand what you see in them. I said you don’t gotta be a saint to be my friend. Some are pop stars some have stolen cars and I’d still pick any of them over you."

Bemis resonded via Twitter:

today i heard the worst new music i've heard since vanilla ice attempted to make rock music. don't quit your day job, dude.

He then apologized via AbsolutePunk.net:

Today I posted a (clearly ineffectively) ambiguous jab at Chad Gilbert's solo offerings. (Chad posted a few new songs on a website today). Stupid? Shallow? Transparent? Yup. That was me pulling a douche card. I apologize for that

Then Gilbert explained that the song was about many women who treated him that way in the past:

I wrote a song about past LoveSSSSSS.

NEW GET UP KIDS EP IN APRIL

The Get Up Kids will release a four song Ep in April called Simple Science. It will be the bands first release since 2004.

NEW MUSIC: CHAD GILBERT

Chad Gilbert of New Found Glory recently debuted his solo project called What's Eating Gilbert? and he's got a few tracks up to listen to at his website. If you are now or have ever been a fan of New Found Glory, you'll probably dig this quite a bit.

At first I was surprised at how much the songs sounded like something The Wonders would have written (you know, from That Thing You Do). Apparently I wasn't alone and Gilbert even mentions that on his website.

ALL THAT REMAINS SINGER FILLS IN FOR KILLSWITCH ENGAGE

Speaking of replacement singers, Killswitch Engage frontman Howard Jones recently left the bands current tour amid a flurry of rumors that he had either been fired or quit. The remaining band members have been pretty quiet about it for the last week while All That Remains singer Phil Labonte filled in.

Earlier today, Killswitch Engage released a statement on the situation that you can read here.

Sounds like Jones will be out for a while and Labonte will be in.

IGNITE'S ZOLI TEGLAS NAMED FULL-TIME PENNYWISE FRONTMAN

"What started out as a temporary position was just too good to put an end to," said Pennywise bassist Randy Bradbury. "Zoli brings to the table a tremendous vocal ability, creativity, and a die hard work ethic. There is a bond that makes this change feel like it was simply meant to be, and considering the recent unfortunate events, having Zoli join the band is a well needed shot of positive energy."

"And, finally, right? Rennie has completed vocal work on tracks by Pulling Teeth ('Generals of Darkened Hymns' which will be on a split with Irons coming out on Deathwish), Pristina ('The Drought' - which in addition to their vocalist, Brendan, there are appearances by Bloodlet, Hope and Suicide, Junior Bruce vocalist Scott Angelacos, Steve Austin of Today is the Day and Charles Manson), and Elodea. Dan here. As you may have noticed I've been M.I.A. for the last few weeks due to some hectic projects with my work. My time is freeing up though and I thought this would be a great chance to ask you what you'd like to see more of here on GCA.

Personally, I plan to place more emphasis on Salt Lake City Hardcore content, past and present -- obviously something we've always focused on but I know we could do better.

Color me surprised. I had no idea these guys were even a band anymore, but I'm actually really excited that they are.

Not only are they back, but they'll have a new album out on Universal (!) Records later this year. And if the new song they put up is any indication, it's going to be a good one.

ONE VOICE: BILL FRENCH

Bill French needs little introduction. He started his first band -- Deadfall -- over a decade ago. From Deadfall came 78 Days After Death. From 78 Days came Cherem. From Cherem came Up River. Here's the rest of the story:   

How were you introduced to the Salt Lake Hardcore scene?

I got into hardcore in 94, when my friend Joe Dressler told me about some show that was only .25 cents to get into. A band had hit him up at a mall, saying that they were playing and gave him a flyer.

We were both too young to drive so got our friends older sister to drive us all to the show. The band was called Bleed and the venue was called The Punk House. It was an abandoned construction trailer, right over the overpass on 4th south in downtown Salt Lake. This was well before they created that giant freeway off ramp. So there was really nothing over there but abandon buildings, railroad tracks and industrial machines.

I started looking for more records like it, buying other Ebullition Records like Struggle, Downcast and Portraits of Past. In many ways, it was these bands that shaped my views on hardcore and my life on a whole.

It wasn't until two years later that I actually got involved in the SLC hardcore scene when I started tagging along with a friend of mine to some of the local shows. Believe it or not, before the internet became prevalent, you had to be in the loop about shows or you just didn't hear about them.

What are some of your greatest SLHC memories?

That's a rough question, so many things instantly come to mind. I think more than any particular instance though, the entirety of my experiences have added up into something even better than just feeling nostalgic for any one particular moment.

When i think about Salt Lake City hardcore, I just think about how lucky I have been to have such good friends and to have had such amazing times with them. From starting bands and putting on shows, through all of the hardest times, I've had the very best times in my life with some of the greatest people I have ever met. Sometimes I think we take this for granted and fail to realize how unique this really is. Just take a look around and see how other social groups interact with each other, coming in and out of each others lives, stabbing each other in the back, only scratching the surface with who they truly are.

Then I think about my life. I've known many of these people for ten to fifteen years. We've grown up and built something really positive together. Even when the bands no longer inspire, only sing about things we can't relate to or have no passion behind them, we're still here and the spirit that brought us there is still alive.

I think that could be something unique to hardcore. Without the music, the friendship and drive still exists. People still roll out to shows for bands that don't care for. They still get passionate abut seeing old bands reunited. It's another reason why so many bands get back together after a long hiatus. Even when hardcore is over saturated and exploited by the mainstream, the energy that brought us all together still exists and we are drawn to it.

Once you're a part of it, it's with you for life and you'll draw from these experiences and that spirit until the end of your days. So these are my greatest memories... that and when Vanilla Ice got punched out.

What are your favorite SLHC bands, past and/or present, and why?

Some of my very favorite... some very very good bands. Clear, Climb, Triphammer, Decontaminate, Faucet/Pathway, Lifeless, Lazarus Project, Conviction, Enchworm, and all of the bands around when I first got into hardcore and the subsequent bands that spawned from them were all very influential. I still listen to a lot of that stuff, aside from the ones that never made it to digital format.

I really liked some of the project bands that were around for only a short time. Arkham Asylum was awesome. Then the bands that I don't remember how to spell their names Carcano 6.5, Haloraker... Damn, the more I list, the more I find that I really just like most of the bands that have come out for one reason or another. Dead Peasants Insurance, Skeiff Da Bargg (I quote that line "While you count the money, fuck you." every time I go out to a group dinner. That's a good one) Tamerlane, Aftermath Of A Trainwreck... really just too many to mention.

So I can just say that I'm very thankful for everyone that I've ever been able to play in a band with, to play a show with, or been able to watch live and be influenced by.

How has hardcore and the Salt Lake scene impacted your life? 

I think I could write a book on this. In many ways, I would say that it was the best thing to ever happen to me. I found a sense of purpose, realized that my life was in my hands and that if there were things in life that I didn't like, I had the power to change them. Some of the best people, most influential people and the most dear people to me I've met through the hardcore scene. It's been a great community, network of support and just a damned good time. There have been some downsides, but there is with everything.

What are your thoughts on the state of hardcore today and its future? 

I think hardcore has definitely changed, but it's still very much alive and in a good place. People have always complained about how things are and wished for things to be how they were. That is nothing new. In the mid-90's people were complaining about the state of hardcore, saying it was dead while 600 kids would roll up to shows. It's changing like always, evolving and bands are still making their mark. I'm hopeful for the future.

SNAPCASE TO TOUR EUROPE

New York hardcore band Snapcase has been more or less dormant for the past five years (with the exception of a few select appearances here or there), but they've recently announced plans for a short European Tour.

And you know what that means?

If they make enough money from that, they'll probably do a full U.S. reunion tour, too!

Hell, Earth Crisis is already back. I say get Strife out of retirement (again) and let's have another California Takeover!

As long as they play this song, I'll be there.

Walter: I’ve been playing “Don’t Gotta Prove It” which is a song I wrote for Civ. I wrote the entire first album, not a lot of people know that.

ESSENTIAL LISTENING: MODERN LIFE IS WAR - MY LOVE, MY WAY

Modern Life Is War wasn't around for very long, but their run was highlighted by several great releases. Their debut, My Love, My Way, was probably their strongest effort. It was fast, pissed and heartfelt - the three components that make for a classic hardcore record and was highlighted what may be the band's best song, "By The Sea."

We've been to the edge and we know what it's like to want to die, 

and that's something we won't glorify.

We'll leave those miserable times behind.

How far can I go? I'm rising from the depths of my own hell.

I don't need another tragic tale. I need the strength to walk the other way.

I found conviction in my ever changing mind. I grew up tied down and bleeding on the inside,

but I know I was a victim of my own device, and I want to live to see a brand new life.

LEARN TO MOSH WITH ANDREW W.K.

Alright, the title is a little bit misleading but it was funny right? And he did show off some kick-ass moves there, there's no denying that.

On a different note, anyone heard the rumor/story that Andrew W.K. is the product of a record company focus group and has been played by several different people over the course of his "career"?

It's not completely unbelievable for a record label to try. They manufacture boy bands and pop stars all the time (or, did anyway). It's completely possible that they decided to try and capture the attention of another demographic with a scheme like that.

Either way, this is still a great song.

BEHIND THE SUIT AND TIE TRAILER

This looks like it could be an interesting documentary. It's about the decline of the industry and the rise of digital downloads told from the perspective of record label executives. At six minutes, I don't think it constitutes a 'trailer' but it's still pretty good.

Unfortunately, it sounds like the majority of the film will be label execs doing their "Oh, poor me!" routine and will probably get really boring really fast. Still, it's an interesting take.

Vanity Fair -- The head spins. This will take days to filter. Days? Weeks, months even. There’s Tom Tancredo’s recent baby’s-up-past-bedtime blather at a Tea Party event about the “cult of multiculturalism”—wow! Mr. T, do you really want to have a literacy test for voters? Think if they had one when you ran for office that you would have been elected? Oliver North’s melding of homosexuality and pedophilia on Fox News when he flexed his mini-mind and ranted paranoid on the topic of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell—righteous! Ollie, you need better makeup to hide the gills on your neck! Don’t Ask Oliver North where he can get one solid fact to back up his bizarre assertions. Don’t Tell the shamed ex-Marine that the military already has thousands of brave homosexual men and women serving their country and defending the Constitution, who would never think of behaving as he did back in the Iran-Contra days. Then again, why bother with Lieutenant Colonel North? He’s an irrelevant relic of the failed Reagan administration.

Then there’s Sarah Palin, who, egged on by other intellectually malnourished “real Americans,” has said so many startlingly stupid things in the last few days, the comedic furnaces won’t be cooling down any time soon! She’s a dynamo of dumbassity! An inferno of idiocy! Yes, Ms. Palin, 2012 is almost in your grasp! Reach for the stars, get a map, find Iran, start another pointless war we can’t afford! Score!

Just when America really needs to get to work and move forward, some of the dimmest bulbs in the country decide it’s time to turn on and lead the race to the bottom. Christian groups freaked out by the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act and its threat to their religious freedom to hate homosexuals—don’t worry, homophobes! The First Amendment protects your right to tell the world that gays are hell-bound! No one’s trying to impose a “homosexual agenda” on you! The rest of us are just trying to impose some much-needed decency and cultural evolution. I know, I know, fear the change, fear the equality, progress, blahblahblah …

You silly grown-ups! The future is hilarious and very problematic, thanks to you. Cheer up! I’ll do my best to track your epic, very public nosedive.

FAR TO RELEASE NEW ALBUM

Punknews.org -- Far will be releasing their first new full length in more than a decade. The record is titled At Night We Live and is due out May 18, 2010. It is the follow-up to Water & Solutions which was released in 1998.

The band includes Jonah Matranga of Gratitude, New End Original, OneLineDrawing and Shaun Lopez of The Revolution Smile and (briefly) Rival Schools. Jonah commented on the record:

"I've got ten years of interviews saying this would never happen, that Far would never play together, let alone make a record, so I really have no idea what will happen from here on out. All I know is that I'm really proud of the record, and I think it stands with anything we've made. Really, that's all I cared about as we were making it. This record has some of our heaviest moments, our prettiest moments, our most epic moments, our weirdest moments -- and even with all those twists and turns, I actually think it's the most cohesive record we've ever made."

NEW MUSIC: DOWN BY LAW

Down By Law hasn't released a new album since 2003, but they've been playing shows every now and then for the past few years. It seems that they might have a new record in the works because they've posted a new song called "Crystal" on their Facebook page.

SLHC MUSIC ARCHIVE: FROM THE MEAN STREETS COMPILATION

*We didn't really have a chance to post anything yesterday, so we're starting off the day with the Salt Lake Hardcore Archive download and we'll end with an Essential Listening later tonight.*

The From the Mean Streets Compilation was released in December 2003 and acts as a snapshot into what the Salt Lake City Hardcore scene was like nearly a decade ago.

It features early recordings from bands like Aftermath of a Trainwreck, 78 Days After Death, Cherem and Parallax and a few lesser known groups like Minion and Timebomb. The comp also features two tracks from pre-Reviver metal band Grace From Gallows.

The actual CD's are out of press and relatively hard to find and while most of the material made it's way to the bands other, later releases (some re-recorded), some of it exists only on this one compilation.

MYSPACE TO USE AUDIO ADS MORE PROMINENTLY

Myspace might have been the best thing to ever happen to small, unsigned or independent bands. Their music pages are free, far-reaching and easy to use. Bands have used Myspace to book full tours, share music and give away music.

But that might be changing. Myspace has started using unavoidable audio ads in the music player that cannot be skipped. In order to hear a song by a band, you may have to listen to 30 seconds of advertising before the track starts. Myspace is using to boost revenue and in turn making the music pages more like radio—which a lot of people stopped listening to because of too many commercials (I know I did).

Executives at Myspace haven't determined how often the ads will run—or if they'll be placed on every single music page or just the more popular ones—but expect them to become more prominent in the near future.

NO WORLD ORDER RECORDS LAUNCHES, ANNOUNCES CABLE PRE-ORDERS

Cable's Northern Failures was released through Hydra Head Records back in 2000, but never got a proper vinyl release.

Until now, that is.

Recently formed label, No World Order Records has acquired the rights and has a vinyl release planned for April of this year. The first pressing will be limited to 340 on black, with all covers made of heavy duty canvas, hand printed and hand sewn.

Salt Lake native Coty Densley has been living in New York the past few years trying to get a vinyl-only label off the ground and finally got it up an running. There are more releases planned for 2010, but he's keeping the bands under wraps until all the details are nailed down. He did mention that "One of which every Salt Lake kid would be into. Like Integrity/Ringworm but darker and more pissed."

To help promote the record, Cable will be playing a one-off show in Brooklyn on April 16 at Union Pool. You'll be able to get the record in person as well as a live audio recording of the show.
