SALT LAKE HARDCORE 101: ICEBURN
Iceburn was born of Salt Lake's early straight edge hardcore scene but ventured into the deepest realms of jazz, metal, classical and avant-garde experimentation during its decade-plus existence.
With this crew, Iceburn released the Burn / Fall 7" through Victory Records in 1991. Shortly after the record's release, frontman Jeremy Chatelain left the band to pursue other projects: Lumberjack, Handsome, Jets to Brazil, Cub Country... this list will undoubtedly go on. Guitarist James Holder also left the band.
Iceburn decided to move forward as a three-piece. Their next album, Firon (also on Victory), was released in 1992 and led to a record deal with another hardcore history maker, Revelation Records.
Ninety-six saw the band releasing Meditavolutions under its new moniker, The Iceburn Collective. Journeying deeper into experimental galaxies, 98's Power of the Lion was rumored to be inspired by quantum mechanics and was meant to be played as a musical collage.
The new millenium saw the Collective reaching ever further into avant-territory with 2000's Polar Bear Suit, which featured 2 upright basses, bass clarinet and bassoon, and 2002's mini-album Land of Wind and Ghosts.
In 2001, the band recorded a few songs meant to be released in a Southern Lord Records 7" series. The deal didn't work out but 2006 saw the songs released as a split with Italian band Zu. It was put out in Italy as a limited 500-copy 10" split. This would be Iceburn's final release.
Iceburn reunited for a few shows in 2007 but have not announced plans of future recordings or performances.
These days you can find Densley playing across the nation in the duo Eagle Twin with Tyler Smith (ex-Clear) on drums He also recently released an album with Greg Anderson of Engine Kid/Sunn O)))/Goatsnake under the name, Ascend. Doug Wright went on to play with Salt Lake's Makeshift. He now plays with up-and-coming New York City rock band, The Dirty Pearls.
BLACK FRIDAY TRAMPLING
A Wal-Mart worker died after being trampled when hundreds of shoppers smashed through the doors of a Long Island store Friday morning, police and witnesses said.
The 34-year-old employee, a temporary maintenance worker, tried to hold back the unruly crowds just after the Valley Stream store opened at 5 a.m.
Witnesses said the surging throngs of shoppers knocked the man down. He fell and was stepped on. As he gasped for air, shoppers ran over and around him.
"He was bum-rushed by 200 people," said Jimmy Overby, 43, a co-worker. "They took the doors off the hinges. He was trampled and killed in front of me. They took me down too...I literally had to fight people off my back."

HOLY SHIT! JURASSIC PARK JUST BECAME A REALITY
Mammoths May Roam Again After 27,000 Years - BODIES of extinct Ice Age mammals, such as woolly mammoths, that have been frozen in permafrost for thousands of years may contain viable sperm that could be used to bring them back from the dead, scientists said yesterday.
Research has indicated that mammalian sperm can survive being frozen for much longer than was previously thought, suggesting that it could potentially be recovered from species that have died out.
Several well-preserved mammoth carcasses have been found in the permafrost of Siberia, and scientists estimate that there could be millions more.
Last year a Canadian team demonstrated that it was possible to extract DNA from the specimens, and announced the sequencing of about 1 per cent of the genome of a mammoth that died about 27,000 years ago.

UNCYCLOPEDIA ON SALT LAKE CITY
On Rose Park:
CLASSIFIED (psst..., just a bunch of houses and not a park named Rose in sight.)
It's pretty much just a poorer version of Glendale. Mexicans and their boom-boom are all one can see or hear for miles. They hold the State Fair here at the aptly named State Fairgrounds, but nobody from any of the inhabited counties ever bothers to show.
Also known as Sugarhouse, Shugacrib, Casa de Azucar, and Hippieville, Sugar House is the most diverse and tolerant region of Salt Lake. It goes from 200 East at its western edge to 2000 East at the east and 1300 South to about 3300 South north to south. Home to Wendy's, Toys "Я" Us, Barnes and Noble, SugarHouse Park, and many other things children beg to visit (like the polluting Jell-o factory), she is also home to the Heavy Metal Shoppe, Blue Boutique lingerie shop, and Catholics/Greeks. During the

UPDATE ON TAMERLANE RECORDING
The plan was a 5 or 6 song ep, but two days before, we said fuck it and recorded everything we had. 10 songs that translate to about an hour of music. The result (which is about halfway finished) is two old songs re-recorded and 8 brand new tracks.
If you've seen us play live, you've heard two or three of them already, but we laid down 5 that no one has heard yet and they're shaping up to be amazing. We'll be playing a few of the new songs at the Starkweather show next month, but the actual album won't be done until sometime in the spring.
We've still got leads, vocals, mixing and mastering to finish which may take time but we want to do it right. We've got an artist in mind for the layout and we're getting him ideas so he can start.
You've held out this long already, so a few more months shouldn't be that big of a deal. We'll give you more info when we have it, but for now, rest assured that a new Tamerlane record is a reality. If Chinese Democracy can finally see the light of day, we can get our shit together too.

PETER YOUNG TO SPEAK AT THE DOWNTOWN LIBRARY ON MONDAY
Peter Young is a former political prisoner jailed for two years for his role in releasing and conspiracy to release thousands of mink from fur farms in the Midwest.
He'll be speaking on topics such as Prison, Political Persecutions, Going Underground For Animal Liberation, and probably anything else he feels like.
November 24th @ 7PM,
Downtown SLC Library
4th floor.
The following was the statement he made upon his sentencing a few years back: "This is the customary time when the defendant expresses regret for the crimes they committed, so let me do that because I am not without my regrets. I am here today to be sentenced for my participation in releasing mink from 6 fur farms. I regret it was only 6. I'm also here today to be sentenced for my participation in the freeing of 8,000 mink from those farms. I regret it was only 8,000. It is my understanding of those 6 farms, only 2 of them have since shut down. I regret it was only 2.
More than anything, I regret my restraint, because whatever damage we did to those businesses, if those farms were left standing, and if one animal was left behind, then it wasn't enough.
I don't wish to validate this proceeding by begging for mercy or appealing to the conscience of the court, because I know if this system had a conscience I would not be here, and in my place would be all the butchers, vivisectors, and fur farmers of the world.
Just as I will remain unbowed before this court- who would see me imprisoned for an act of conscience- I will also deny the fur farmers in the room the pleasure of seeing me bow down before them. To those people here whose sheds I may have visited in 1997, let me tell you directly for the first time, it was a pleasure to raid your farms and to free those animals you held captive. It is to those animals I answer to, not you or this court. I will forever mark those nights on your property as the most rewarding experience of my life."
And to those farmers or other savages who may read my words in the future and smile at my fate, just remember: We have put more of you in bankruptcy than you have put liberators in prison. Don't forget that.
Let me thank everyone in the courtroom who came to support me today. It is my last wish before prison that each of you drive to a nearby fur farm tonight, tear down its fence and open every cage.
That's all"

THE CHILDREN ARE OUR FUTURE
REXBURG, Idaho - The mayor of an eastern Idaho town where second- and third-grade students on a school bus chanted "assassinate Obama!" after the Nov. 4 election has publicly apologized, saying there's no excuse for such behavior.
Rexburg Mayor Shawn Larsen wrote in a guest editorial sent Tuesday to local newspapers that he was saddened by the notoriety his community had received over the incident, both across the United States and abroad.
Larsen told The Associated Press that a formal response to the incident in his city was sorely needed.
"When people don't stand up and say, 'That's not appropriate, that's wrong, and those are
hateful remarks,' it's almost like they are saying that it's an OK thing to do. And it's not," he said.
"The mayor doesn't have any authority over the school system, but I do think it reflects upon the community."

DOGWELDER REUNITES
From the band's MySpace Blog:
"So we are back. After a few line up changes we are finally back. We will be a 4 piece for know until we find a second guitar but the new line up is Casey/Spidey on vocals, Adam on guitar, Joe on Bass and Jason on Drums. Its gonna be sweet so look out."
And loosely quoting Casey from a few nights back at the downtown Este Pizza Shop (GO EAT THERE NOW):
"It'll be like Killing Time meets Deadguy... Like Sick of it All meets Disembodied. Then they had a baby and that baby fucked the offspring of the babies created by Judge fucking Integrity and Gorilla Biscuits fucking Sheer Terror and those two fucking each other and making a baby."

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT
- CHOKEHOLD -
STABBED? RUN OVER? NO BIGGIE.
A man escaped with no serious injuries after being stabbed, and then hit by a car early Saturday morning, Salt Lake City police said.
Just before 3 a.m., the 20-year-old man walked out of a 7-Eleven store on the 100 West block of 1700 South and was hit over the head with a bottle, then stabbed during a fight, said Salt Lake City police Lt. Cal Kunz. The man stepped off the curb and was hit by a slow-moving car. The man went to Pioneer Valley Hospital, were he was treated for minor injuries.
*Picture is not of actual victim. Just a man equally injured but still raging.
PLAYING DOCTOR KEVORKIAN...
From the Salt Lake Tribune:
A Salt Lake County man who poked holes in the hands of his girlfriend's 2-year-old daughter -- in what a defense attorney called an ill-advised attempt to provide medical care -- was sent to prison Monday for up to five years.
Derrick Lee Crispin, 30, and the girl's mother, Amy Ellene Roberts, 31, were trying to treat what they believed was a case of cellulitis, a skin disease that causes swelling.
"They were trying to get the pus out of her hands" by sucking it out with a syringe, defense attorney Earl Xaiz told 3rd District Judge Sheila McCleve.
While holding the girl's hands during the Jan. 6 operation, Rogers held the victim hard enough to break a half-dozen bones in each hand, Xaiz said.
The couple then put iodine on the girl's hands, which she rubbed into her eyes, causing temporary blindness.
When they took the girl to a hospital several days later, doctors feared the girl might permanently lose her eyesight.
"I should have known better than to play doctor," Crispin told the court Monday. "I'm sorry. I made some very bad decisions."
