Catholic Community Services is closing the shelter this summer as the organization expands other homeless prevention programs. The shelter's days of operation will be reduced gradually.
The shelter has been running on a deficit because of a lack of financial support. It provides a place for the homeless to go during the day to spend time and keep warm.
Some homeless who have used the shelter say they'll now spend days at Pioneer Park or riding the bus or TRAX trains.
But Pamela Atkinson, a community advocate, says that while the shelter has kept people off the street, it hasn't gotten them into case management or treatment programs.
