DOWNTOWN CARRIAGE HORSE SNAPS

Salt Lake Tribune -- An Idaho Falls family visiting Salt Lake City entered an unexpected carriage racing derby Saturday night, when a planned leisurely ride through downtown turned into a case of a runaway horse.

The family of seven was westbound in a horse-drawn carriage on 300 South near Main Street around 10 p.m., said Salt Lake City Police Lt. Mark Scharman, when "Jim", the black 12-year-old horse pulling the carriage, became spooked.

Jim broke into a trot and then a full gallop about a half block from Main Street, but his owner, Jason Kirton was able to subdue the animal, Scharman said. When Kirton brought the carriage to a stop, he exited it to try to calm Jim before continuing the ride with his patrons.

The horse, however, became frightened again, dragging Kirton along the street and forcing him to let go of the reins, Scharman said. The family of seven was then left in the carriage with the horse running away and no driver to stop him, Scharman.

"It goes into a full run; this family is in there hanging on for dear life," he said.

STARKWEATHER SIGNS TO DEATHWISH INC.

We'd heard rumblings about this last year when they were in town, but now it's finally official. Here's a statement from the band:

"It's been a long four years since our last release. In that time we've been to Europe, played some spectacular and not so spectacular shows in the States, and have written over two albums worth of new material in the bunker. After fulfilling a contractual obligation, we're finally ready to announce that we've signed with Jacob Bannon's Deathwish Inc. With a nearly two decade relationship, this union seemed like the next logical step for the sometimes difficult and idiosyncratic guys in Starkweather. Having known us for as long as he has, Jake is well aware of how obstinate, eccentric, and protective we are of what we do.

"Our first release on Deathwish will be a split release with the colossal Overmars from France. Our contributions to the album are 'Armed Memory,' a seven and a half minute long jagged and aggressive song in the vein of 'Machine Rhythm Confessional' from Croatoan and the second song 'Nightmare Factory,' a Black Sabbath by way of Fear Of God meeting Ved Buens Ende dirge that courses nearly 14 minutes. 'Nightmare' was planned to appear on Croatoan but the version we recorded was subpar and thusly shelved. Both songs for the split were recorded October 11-13 at DeadVerse Studio in Union City, New Jersey under the unflinching eye of Alap Momin. Both songs are dense, claustrophobic, and evoke the paranoia that fueled their writing; containing layer upon layer of guitar, vocals that ebb and flow with the twisting rhythmic passages, and the near telekinetic foundation of the Rosa brothers backline. As a nerdy side note, there was no click track, no beat detective, and no vocal tuning; the drum tracks are one continuous take with us playing together in the live room. A release date and other specifics will be announced soon.

"Our next release on Deathwish, This Sheltering Night, was actually recorded before the split with Overmars at various sessions throughout 2007-2008 at DeadVerse Studios. This is six Starkweather songs ('Bustuari,' 'Epiphany,' 'All Creatures Damned And Divine,' 'Broken From Inside,' 'Martyring,' and 'One Among Vermin') and features soundscape interludes created by artist and musician Elizabeth Jacobs, under her guise as Sophia Perennis, and Oktopus from Dalek. The entire album can be played as one continuous 73:41 piece or as separate tracks. A release date and other specifics will also be announced soon. In the pipeline: Split CD with Singapore's Little Girl Terrorist (featuring the 30+ minute long Drug Holiday) that will be available on Swarm of Nails Records. (Artwork for the Little Girl Terrorist split will be provided by Alex Eckman-Lawn); A split CD with Cali grindcore mavens thousandswilldie that will showcase a slightly different dimension in sound. Featuring a song that carries a spacious Pink Floyd aesthetic crossing angular dissonances of Deathspell Omega and Ved Buens Endes/Virus. This clocks in at about 15 minutes. Both songs will be recorded at DeadVerse Studio in October; Another full length that we have 3 full songs written for and an overwhelming amount of other material to pull from."

FINAL TWILIGHT CONCERT OF THE YEAR

Tonight marks the final outing of the Thursday night concert series—and it might be the last one for a while. The planned Gallivan Center remodel will start soon, leaving the location of next year's concerts uncertain.

There's talk of setting up a temporary stage at Library Square, but nothing is set in stone yet.

So tonight, head down and catch Robert Randolph & the Family Band and Black Joe Lewis and think about all the good things that will come with the newly remodeled Gallivan Center in 2011 (including bathrooms and more areas where you can actually see the stage).

COALESCE TO RELEASE NEW EP

Coalesce released their first full length in nearly a decade this past summer (it's called OX and it's great), but they're not done yet.

The band plans to release another 7-song EP (called OXEP) in November. They're planning a west coast show in early October, so keep an eye on their Myspace site if you want to see them.

SALT LAKE MAGAZINE INTERVIEW WITH DAN CHRISTOFFERSON

Salt Lake Magazine -- Dan Christofferson is used to dealing with misperceptions.

When he went on his Mormon mission in central Europe after high school, the natives thought he was Amish and asked him how he lived without electricity.

When he came home to Utah and started covering his arms with intricate artwork in the form of tattoos, some thought he had strayed from his faith.

And when his own art started blending meticulous hand-drawing and painting with computer-manipulated digital imagery, it was probably hard for traditionalists to know what to make of the young artist.

PENNYWISE SINGER LEAVES BAND

Epitaph Records released a statement from Pennywise singer Jim Lindberg regarding his choice.

"After 20 years, nine albums and thousands of shows around the world, my time in Pennywise has come to an end. Being the singer for this band has been an amazing experience, and along the way we made some of the best fans anyone could ask for. There are few things that made me more proud than seeing people at our shows singing our songs, and it’s your support and encouragement that’s kept me going this long. I would sincerely like to thank everyone who helped us along the way and wish everyone in the Pennywise family the best of luck and continued success. Yours truly, Jim.”

Pennywise plans to continue on without him and will start the search for a new singer soon. The remaining members released this statement shortly after.

“After 19 years with Pennywise, Jim Lindberg has decided to step down as lead singer. Pennywise has long stood behind the motto that you should always follow your heart and pursue what makes you happy, and we wish Jim the best of luck in his new ventures, whatever they may be. Pennywise has become a way of life for a lot of people, and has definitely become a way of life for us. As the three remaining members of Pennywise we feel that we are not done delivering our message to our fans.

”The band has always been about moving forward in life no matter what obstacles stand in front of you. We will begin our search for a new singer immediately. CHRISSIE HYNDE KICKS OFF NEW PETA CAMPAIGN IN SALT LAKE CITY

The Pretenders' world tour landed in Salt Lake City on Sunday—and Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Chrissie Hynde was happy to use the occasion to launch her PETA campaign urging McDonald's to require its suppliers to upgrade to less cruel slaughter methods. In addition to using her stage as a platform to advocate a McDonald's boycott and tossing campaign T-shirts to her audience, Chrissie unveiled her brand-new "i'm hatin' it" ad at a Salt Lake City McDonald's today.

MICHAEL JACKSON'S DEATH OFFICIALLY RULED A HOMICIDE

AP -- LOS ANGELES (AP) -- The Los Angeles County coroner has ruled Michael Jackson's death a homicide and a combination of drugs was the cause, a law enforcement official told The Associated Press, a finding that makes it more likely criminal charges will be filed against the doctor who was with the pop star when he died.
Forensic tests found the powerful anesthetic propofol acted together with at least two sedatives to cause Jackson's death June 25 in his rented Los Angeles mansion, according to the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the findings have not been publicly released.
Dr. Conrad Murray, a Las Vegas cardiologist who became Jackson's personal physician weeks before his death, is the target of a manslaughter investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department. A designation of homicide means that Jackson died at the hands of another, but does not necessarily mean a crime was committed.

GCA WEEKEND PREVIEW AUGUST 21-23

Summer is officially over after this weekend. The U starts on Monday and that means that pretty much everything shuts down and goes back into school mode. Make the most of these next few days.

FRIDAY - All kinds of good stuff going on tonight but first things first, it's Gallery Stroll. Your first stop should be Fice clothing store (160 E. 200 S.) for "Suicide Court" with new works by GCA logo designer Dan Christofferson. It's right next to Este, so pop in for a quick bite before heading back out on the town.
After that, head down to In The Venue and catch one of the best shows of the summer. The Melvins, Down and Weedeater will be playing all night.
If you're looking to extend the evening after the show, head over to the Gateway Megaplex and catch Inglourious Basterds. Quentin Tarantino may have fallen off a little bit (if Deathproof is any indication) but this may be his return to the top. And Brad Pitt is always good when he doesn't have to play the sensitive love interest.
SATURDAY - Farmer's Market only has a few weeks left, and if you haven't been down yet this year make sure you do. It runs from 8am to 1pm.
Spend the rest of the day lounging on the patio with a cool drink or stop in to the Vertical Diner and get the vegan Breaded Chicken Sandwich, which PETA named one of the 10 best in the country.
After that, the Salt Lake Bees play the Las Vegas 51's and nothing says summer like a night at the ballpark.
SUNDAY - If you're up early enough head up the canyon for the Park Silly Sunday Market. It's kind of like the Farmer's Market, but apparently way funnier and more random.
If you got your fill of metal for the weekend and need something a little different, head up to Red Butte Garden. The Pretenders, Juliette Lewis and Cat Power take the stage for one of the last Red Butte concerts of 2009.

7 SECONDS INTERVIEWS BOUNCING SOULS (AND VICE VERSA)

Kevin Seconds and Greg Attonito have both been fronting bands for a long time. 2009 marks the 20th year for the Bouncing Souls and 7 Seconds are closing in on 30 years as a band. The two groups kick off an east coast tour this month (with Lifetime), but first, the vocalists took a break to interview each other.

AWK TO TOUR WITH STRING QUARTET

PunkNews -- Andrew W.K. has announced plans to tour with chamber ensemble the Calder Quartet. The unlikely pairing will perform a mix of traditional standards and improvisations at a week's worth of shows kicking off September 29th. The project was born from a performance at the Wordless Music Series in New York City, where A.W.K. and Calder Quartet had original works commissioned by The Explorers Club and performed at the club's annual dinner. Metal Edge Magazine witnessed the show and commented "It was strange as hell and it pretty much ruled."

Andrew W.K.'s new full length 55 Cadillac arrives on September 8th. The album, self described as "spontaneous solo piano improvisations," is being released on CD via Andrew's own Skyscraper Music Maker label, with an LP coming out on Thurston Moore's Ecstatic Peace! label.

SOUL CONTROL POSTS NEW TRACK

Soul Control have posted a song from their upcoming debut for Bridge Nine, Cycles. The record is due out August 25, 2009 and will follow up Involution, released in 2007 on Rivalry Records. The band will be hitting the road hard in support of the record beginning next month. Catch the band at Uprok in SLC with Collapse on September 28th.

CONVERGE RELEASES UPDATE, ARTWORK

LambGoat // As many of you know by now, Converge will be releasing their long-awaited new studio album, "Axe To Fall," on October 20th via Epitaph Records (with vinyl to be issued by Deathwish Inc.).

The effort was recorded by guitarist Kurt Ballou at this Godcity studios in Salem, MA and features guest appearances from a host of notables, including Steve Brodsky (Cave In), Adam McGrath (Cave In), J.R. Connors (Cave In, Doomriders), Uffe Cederlund (Disfear, ex-Entombed), John Pettibone (The Vows, Himsa), Steve Von Till (Neurosis), and Mookie Singerman (Genghis Tron).

CHIP ON MY SHOULDER - TONIGHT!

"Chip On My Shoulder: A Cautionary Tale of Slapshot" will play tonight at 9:30 PM at the Post Theater on the U of U campus (directions below).

Tickets are $10 and are available all day today at Slowtrain Records and the Tower Theater.

We will have tickets available at the door as well (cash only at the door). The film is not sold out, so everyone come out and see a great movie.

POST THEATER DIRECTIONS
From Foothill Drive, turn on MARIO CAPECCHI DRIVE (used to be called Wasatch Drive, but they changed the name for some reason).

Turn right on SOUTH CAMPUS DRIVE and head East.

The POST THEATER is on at the top of that street. It's a stand-alone building and there will be Salt Lake City Film Festival Staff out front.

Parking is free anywhere near there after 6 PM, so don't stress looking for a spot.

The film starts promptly at 9:30 PM. Show up 20 minutes beforehand to buy tickets and get seated.

HOUSE SHOWS TONIGHT AND TOMORROW IN TAYLORSVILLE

RIP - LES PAUL

Rolling Stone -- Les Paul, one of the most revered guitarists in history and the father of the electric guitar, passed away last night, August 12th at the age of 94. Paul’s manager confirmed to Rolling Stone that cause of death was respiratory failure, and a statement from Gibson indicates Paul was suffering from severe pneumonia and died at a hospital in White Plains, New York.

This is a man that knew how to shred.

INTERVIEW WITH IAN MCFARLAND - DIRECTOR OF 'CHIP ON MY SHOULDER'

With "Chip On My Shoulder: A Cautionary Tale of Slapshot" playing the Salt Lake City Film Festival this weekend (Saturday, 8/15 at the Post Theater to be specific), the director Ian McFarland was nice enough to sit down and answer a few questions. He'll be unable to attend the screening tomorrow night, but in his place the Executive Producer and the Owner/Founder of Taang! Records Curtis Casella will be on hand to take part in a Q&A session after the film.

And since Ian won't be attending, we're happy to have our own little Q&A session right here on Grudge City Activities.com

What is it about Slapshot that warranted its own documentary?

Well, if you have a band that has managed to be around for as long as Slapshot has (24 years) there is bound to be some sort of story there. Besides the fact that they are the band that introduced me to hardcore, they have definitely made their mark on the history of not only Boston Hardcore but the genre in general.

With your experiences and connections—and because the city has such a rich and storied tradition in the punk/hardcore genre—the film could have very easily morphed into an all-encompassing Boston Hardcore documentary. Was it hard for you to limit your focus to just one band?

To be perfectly honest with you, it was not difficult to stick to Slapshot because the truth is that this film is more about the personal side of the band than the historic side. From day one, Anthony and I wanted to expose a side of the band that no one had ever seen-- the human side and the yin & yang like relationship between Mark McKay and Jack "Choke" Kelly.

Originally I wanted to do a lot of interviews with bands like Sick Of It All, Agnostic Front, Scream, Bad Brains and so forth, but I decided that it was more about the band’s members and their personal side rather than Slapshot the band/act. Therefore we only interviewed the band’s present members and a few past members as well as their roadies. I wanted the people that were there in that van for the whole trip. They were the ones that could talk about what Slapshot did to them rather than what Slapshot did as a band.

I mean yes, the history of the band is definitely in the film but it is not the focus. To me, I wanted to essentially humanize the the superhero-like figures that I had grown up wondering about.

I think a full history documentary film can be done when the band is broken up.

How did you get involved with the band? Had you always been a fan?

The first time I met them, Slapshot and my band (Blood for Blood) were on a three week European tour in 2004. We were sharing a bus, so naturally that makes you either become really close or puts you at odds with each other . Luckily in this case, we all hit it off immediately. We were constantly laughing—it was definitely one of the funniest tours that I have been on. I can’t speak for the other guys In my band, but I can say that for me the experience of touring with a band with so much history and a band that has had so much influence on a subculture was surreal. One nigh on that tour, I was having a dinner with Chris Lauria (Slapshot, bassist) and he was telling me some really amazing stories about the band and their history when it just hit me that no one had done anything with them before. And in talking with Chris more, I realized how interesting their past is. I mean Chris, Mark and the original guitarist Steve Risteen went to Jr. High together and got into hardcore all at the same time. They used to go see Choke’s other bands before Slapshot (Last Rights, Negative FX) when they were literally young teenagers. That was in the early 1980’s; now almost 30 years later they are still friends and doing basically the same things. You don’t see that much these days.

When you brought up the idea to the band, what was the initial reaction?

From the start I wanted to do a documentary film rather than a fan DVD that only the fans would appreciate. I thought that the band had an interesting story that would appeal to a much broader audience if presented in the right way. When I approached the band about the idea, they really didn’t think that their story was very interesting and they didn’t think that anyone would want to hear it other than fans. Regardless, they agreed to let me give it a shot and I began work on the project. I think that once we did the first round of interviews with them, they quickly realized that I was not out to tell just the history of the band but rather was interested in looking at the opposing personalities of drummer Mark McKay and singer Jack “Choke” Kelly over their 30 year history.

The thing that surprised me the most was that these guys just really don’t take the band seriously and never have. I mean yes, the band started with a mission to put the Boston scene back on the map but that was as far as it went. I don’t think that they ever dreamed that they would be together 30 years later, let alone still be close friends. And in looking at the footage of when they were teenagers and being around them today, they really haven't changed too much.

How hard was it to find all the footage from the early 80’s Boston shows?

At times it was a pain in the ass to locate some things, but for the most part I could always fall back on Choke's collection of tour footage. See, most people don't know that Choke actually went to film school at Emerson College in Boston. Some of the footage he filmed is really priceless. As far as gathering other live stuff, Steve Risteeen (original guitarist) was my go-to archival footage guy. He really seemed to have everything I needed and knew where it all was.

How long did the whole process take from conception to finished product?

We went through about 7 different cuts till we found the one that we liked. I am still not 100% happy with it, but I can say that about all my work. Sometimes you have to know when to just say when. We did not work on it full time— we would work on it for a month or two then take a break and come back to it. Altogether the film took about 3 three years from start to finish.

What is your favorite Slapshot song and why?

I don't think that I really have a favorite song but I would say I have a favorite album. "Step On It" seems to alway be the album that has meant more to me than others. It was the first album that I listened to when I was getting into hardcore. I will never forget the moment that I first heard Slapshot (which was also my introduction to hardcore). My best friend Chris Moores and I were hanging out and he thought that I should listen to something other than metal so he threw Slapshot my way. That moment changed my life forever.

What’s next for you as a filmmaker?

Well, I just wrapped on a very large project that I did for the band Meshuggah. They brought me on to direct / produce their new Live DVD. We filmed 4 shows in total (Tokyo, Toronto, Montreal & NYC), all 5-7 HD cameras per night, plus I lived on the road with the band for about a week and a half so I also filmed a bunch of really cool moments with the guys on the road. All in all it's a really unique DVD and plays more like a live/film rather than a band live band DVD.

Right now I am currently looking into a few ideas that I have for documentaries and gearing up to hopefully produce a feature narrative in early 2010 for a friend of mine.

"The 20th anniversary of Biohazard came up last year, and we decided to get the original band back together and just go out and play some shows — be the old band that we were and go play for the audience that we miss and play the old songs and feel alive again and celebrate 20 years of great Biohazard. We went all over the world with it. There's no record out — there's no record company or anything; it's just us, four friends, playing. Biohazard's the same old band that it was; it's like nothing's changed [even though] 10 years, 12 years, have gone by. We wanna do a new record. So we're gonna take this experience and just be completely inspired by the crowds that we have been playing to for the last year and a half. It's such a great opportunity to have a second chance, so we're gonna do a new record, man. So 2010 should see a brand new original Biohazard album."

KSL/THE LDS CHURCH REFUSE TO AIR POKER SHOW

Salt Lake Tribune -- KSL Channel 5, the local television station owned by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, won't air the prime-time poker game show "Face the Ace," saying the subject of gambling does not meet "community standards.
