OH, PROVO...

Salt Lake Tribune -- A Provo man who claimed to be a woman's rescuer after she was attacked while jogging Saturday turned out to be the attacker, police said.

The woman was on the Provo River trail near 840 North and 1300 West when she was attacked from behind about 7:40 p.m., said Sgt. Shane Sorensen. The male attacker forced the woman to the ground and put a piece of cloth soaked with some kind of chemical over her mouth and nose. She screamed and he let her go.

Right after the attack, a man showed up and helped the woman, telling her to calm down and he was there to help her. When police arrived, the man said he had seen the attacker and chased him off.

But when officers interviewed the 25-year-old man, he admitted the he had been the attacker, and had intended to sexually assault the woman. He was arrested on suspicion of aggravated kidnapping and attempted rape.
