SLHC MUSIC ARCHIVE: SEASON OF THE SPRING

We forgot to feature a Salt Lake Hardcore release from our archive on Wednesday so we're gonna drop this in place of our One Voice column this week. And the record is... Season of the Spring's 1993, self-titled full-length.

The album marked the culmination of the Bad Yodeler's 10-year run. After a number of releases under the Yodeler moniker, the band chose a new name, Season of the Spring, and recorded a full-length that epitomized the metal-meets-hardcore-meets-rock sound that it honed during the 80s. Sadly, it would be their final release. I can't speak for other Salt Lake City acts but I can vouch that this record had a major influence on my work in City to City.

STRIKE ANYWHERE, FOUR YEAR STRONG IS A KOLLECTIVE SHOW

Bummer. I actually really wanted to see both of those bands. Good job trying to hide that by putting it at Kilby though.

Time to find something else to do that night.

Jurassic Park is playing for free at the library. Do that instead.

TONIGHT IN SLC: 01/28/2010

Snoop Dogg @ Harry O's
Snoop might not be the same guy he was back when Gin & Juice was all the rage, but he still puts on an entertaining show. Probably the last big show of the Sundance madness, so head on up to Park City if you want to. More Info.

Frozen @ Tower Theatre
One of the films that's been getting a lot of buzz around the festival is Frozen, the story of three friends stranded on a ski lift after the resort has closed for the evening. It's a locally-shot film and supposedly one of the better films of the festival. But, since all the tickets are sold out, it is wait list only. The good thing is that it's already been picked up, so you could just wait for it to be widely released on February 5. More Info.

NEW MUSIC: DOWN TO NOTHING

DOWN TO NOTHING - RECORDING SESSION DECEMBER '09 from Daniel Spector on Vimeo.

JD SALINGER: 1919 - 2010

JD Salinger was another writer that was hugely influential, but in a much different way than Howard Zinn. Catcher in the Rye was his masterpiece and his only finished novel. He released numerous short stories over the years—all highly touted—but none of them ever reached the height of the story of Holden Caulfield.

Salinger lived out his remaining years in self-imposed isolation at his home in New Hampshire, but his status as one of the most influential and inspiring authors never wavered.

Time to pull out those weathered paperbacks and give them another read, and if you haven't ever read any of Salinger's work, then you've got some homework to do.

HOWARD ZINN: 1922 - 2010

Howard Zinn was a huge influence on many people throughout the world and, more specifically, a lot of people in the Salt Lake Hardcore scene.

Zinn was best known for writing The People's History of the United States, which looks at the events of American History from the present perspective. It has been adopted as required reading among some high schools and colleges throughout the United States and was most recently updated in 2003. The book is highly regarded among many involved in the punk/hardcore scene, including Propagandhi, Verse and NOFX. Even The Boss, Bruce Springsteen sites it as a personal favorite.

The book is highly recommended, so if anyone is looking for a new book to read, everyone here at GCA suggests that you head out and pick it up.

Zinn will be missed.

BRACEWAR IN OGDEN - NOT TO BE MISSED

XDELEGATEX IS SERIOUS

The band just posted a ton of new recordings! Give 'em a listen.

P.S. 1:30 to 2:45 of the song "Providence" rules hard.

ONE VOICE: JOSHUA "SPIDEY" RATHBUN

Josh fronts modern-day Salt Lake Hardcore act Dogwelder but he's been a part of the hardcore scene for almost 20 years now. And, he's provided you with some of the hardest-to-find local records over at the Salt Lake Hardcore Blog.

How were you introduced to the Salt Lake Hardcore scene?

Back in '93 I had a bunch of friends who went to shows and were starting to get into hardcore. I was kinda re-discovering punk rock and hardcore was new to me and everyone else I hung out with mostly. So one night, they convinced me to go to my first show, which was Bohemia, Lumberjack and Swim Herschal Swim and it was at Club Starrz. I think the only stuff I had heard at the time was the Salt Flats cd and maybe the Dead City By A Lake tape. I think I just liked all of it. Well, not Mayberry.

Greatest SLHC memories?

A lot of my favorite times were at DV8. As much as I hated the basement shows, there were lots of them and they were good. So many awesome bands played there. I would take a venue like that over a lot of places and I miss it a lot. It really bummed me out when it burned down as it was like a second home to me. Not just for hxc shows but I went to non-hxc shows there too. I know a lot of people feel the same way. It was kind of a hardcore landmark of Salt Lake. I felt the same way about Raunch Records. The late 90's shows at the Tower were so amazing. Every single show there was fucking rad. And to me, it was just great to be able to be in a band, Dogwelder, and play shows with the people I am friends with who are in bands. I can't say that it was great stuff but it always meant a lot to be asked to be on a show.

Favorite SLHC bands?

My favorites of Salt Lake...Probably the most talented and enjoyable would be Triphammer. Up north, like Ogden/Logan area, in the mid-90's there were a bunch of great bands, like Unbound/Veterans Grove. I liked Waterfront a lot, Lifeless too. Really liked Cool Your Jets a lot. Cherem was great. I thought Salt Lake had something really good going in the early to mid 2000's and a lot of kids were going to the shows. I think it had a lot to do with Aftermath but that's just me. They were a very fun band to see. The current bands are good, what ones I have seen. Collapse and Tamerlane are good stuff. Also, outside the hardcore scene, I like Birthquake. They are just very talented. One thing that's funny is that you have bands that later on are considered shit but back in the day everyone who went to shows liked those bands.

How has the Salt Lake Hardcore scene impacted your life?

Well, I think because of hardcore I was turned on to straightedge and 16 years later. I'm still straightedge, so it's definitely had an impact. I have most all of my friends because of the hardcore scene and probably my girlfriend too. I think it is because of hardcore that I have a lot of the feelings and beliefs that I have. And Salt Lake means a lot to me. I would truly never want to move, just because of all I have here. I don't feel I need to leave to be something.

What are your thoughts on the state of the hardcore scene, and its future?

Personally, I think hardcore is in bad shape, especially in Salt Lake. There's no venue here for shows but people don't do shit to promote music. It's hard to see bands playing in town that you enjoy a lot and want to support but then you don't believe in supporting the promoter. It's self-defeating. I have a hard time with that.

And you know, it really chips at me because I look at what we have here and it's nothing. Yeah, I know, sometimes someone has a coffee shop to play in or the back room of a shop but I guess when it's not important to hold onto a decent venue, you have to take what you can get. I guess when the new crowd at shows would rather lean against a wall in the back than be up front, it might not matter if people show up or not. I've never understood that.

Mostly for me, I think it really hurts to be one of those people who never wanted to be the guy who rarely goes to shows or got old or got in a relationship, but at 33, I just don't always have the time. It's a bit too much to go to a show when you work long hours out of town or have a girlfriend who is working on a Masters and you don't see each other. It's hard to make time when you have a lot of personal projects to do, like I have had this year. I haven't been to a show in about 3 or 4 months.

And nowadays, I look at when shows are and most often than not, I have something going on. I haven't outgrown it because I love the music so much still but I just never have the time. I really hope that hardcore in Salt Lake gets a real venue and that people rally around it because growing up in this town with the music it make and the kids it had was the time of my life.

BANKSY DESCENDS ON PARK CITY

*Ed. Note -- I'll be up in Park City for the next week checking out as many movies as I can pack in to a day, so hopefully I'll be able to gather some more info on this one. Sounds like it'll be great if it does indeed play.

Arrested Motion -- Some very interesting developments over in Park City, Utah where the Sundance Film Festival is about to get underway. Apparently, about four new alleged Banksy stencils have popped up, with the one seen above being the best one so far. Adding to the intrigue are the rumors that the “Spotlight Surprise” documentary will actually be about Banksy and entitled “Exit Through The Gift Shop,” the title of a famous piece from his recent Bristol Museum show.

What will be revealed? The true identity of Mr. B? The explanation behind Mr. Brainwash who was supposedly filming a documentary on Banksy? Another hoax or joke on the audience? The possibilities are endless… although the Festival Director John Cooper does describe the documentary by saying - “Surprise is a good thing. Take a chance on this one. I confess, it’s one of my favorites this year.”

EDITED TO ADD - "Exit Through the Gift Shop" has been officially added to the schedule. Screening times are below.

IAN MACKAYE TALKS SKATEBOARDING

Weiden + Kennedy -- an ad agency that focuses on unique multimedia creations -- has posted the third episode of their DIY America video series. In the Skate and Create portion of the series, they interview Minor Threat's Ian Mackaye and Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore about the most punk of pasttimes, skateboarding.

Check it out.

ONE VOICE: AARON HUNSAKER

Better known in the hardcore scene as "Foeknawledge," Aaron Husaker's endeavors in hip-hop turned a lot of kids onto "hardcore" concepts like political awareness, animals rights, and drug-free living during the early 2000s.

After a long hiatus, Foekus jumped back on the mic last October to celebrate the Eleventh Street Electric Gallery's 3rd Anniversary. But with the man's busy schedule as a full-time father, yoga instructor and counselor to SLC youth, no one's sure if it'll happen again. Cross your fingers...

How were you introduced to the Salt Lake Hardcore scene?

I met some straight edge homies around town. I had just gotten out of jail and was over using drugs and drinking. These cats were cool and liked to play c-lo. We started chillin then they started dragging me to shows. I grew up on punk rock but had no experince with the more contemporary hardcore movement. I went to one show and was hooked.

Memorable SLHC moments?

Foekus and Cherem! It all started as a joke and the shit was way fun. Watching people get really wild while I was on stage was dope.

Favorite SLHC bands?

I like Reflect because they covered a 108 song. Mostly old bands though like Bad Yodelers and Season of the Spring. Cool Your Jets was pretty tight too...I don't know, lots of shit I guess.

How has the Salt Lake Hardcore scene impacted your life?

Well, I was an emcee who got into the vegan/straight edge, so I took a lot of social and political influence from hardcore that just straight up made me a better person. Plus all my best homies I ever had came out of the hardcore scene.

What are your thoughts on the state of hardcore and its future?

I don't really listen to a whole lot of new shit but if the band covers a 108 song or some shit, I will be stage dives and high fives all day. I like some of the new bands but I am more into the old sound. i have nothing to say really though, as long as people are having fun.

Showbusiness: The Road to Broadway @ City Library
Dori Berinstein's documentary chronicles a year in the life of four Broadway stage shows. By virtue of her unique stage door access to these shows and a host of others, Berinstein expertly conveys the creative and technical challenges of preparing a production for the twelve-block territory known as Broadway. As we follow each of these shows from inspiration to opening night, the truth of the notion that theater rests on the passion of its practitioners is borne out. Director Berinstein will be in attendance for a post-screening discussion. More Info.

GREG PUCIATO DOES NOT DO STERIODS

A few days back, MTV published an article humorously accusing ten musicians of using steriods. One of these alleged-juicers was the massively-muscled singer of Dillinger Escape Plan, Greg Puciato.

The naturally-built behemoth was not happy about the accusation. He vented on his Twitter page: "Anyone that knows even the slightest bit about me knows that I would think that cheating goes against the ENTIRE POINT of doing anything." He remarked that he thought of letting the writer slide until realizing that it would go again his vow to "SCORCH POSERS AT ALL TIMES."

You can follow the "scorching" via Greg's Twitter feed, read his full response on Noisecreep and read the original article over on MTV, which includes a seemingly contrite apology from the writer..."I was attempting to poke fun at a pretty ridiculous situation, and, in turn, only created a more ridiculous one. It won't happen again. Please don't kill me."

DEP recently posted a new tune dubbed, "Farewell Mona Lisa," to YouTube. Enjoy:

Orgasm: The Strange Science of Female Pleasure @ Gore Auditorium (Westminster College)
In the shocking and hilarious documentary ORGASM INC., filmmaker Liz Canner takes a job editing erotic videos for a drug trial for a pharmaceutical company. Her employer is developing what they hope will be the first Viagra drug for women that wins FDA approval to treat a new disease: Female Sexual Dysfunction (FSD).

Liz gains permission to film the company for her own documentary. Initially, she plans to create a movie about science and pleasure but she soon begins to suspect that her employer, along with a cadre of other medical companies, might be trying to take advantage of women (and potentially endanger their health) in pursuit of billion dollar profits. ORGASM INC. is a powerful look inside the medical industry and the marketing campaigns that are literally and figuratively reshaping our everyday lives around health, illness, desire — and that ultimate moment: orgasm. Director Liz Canner will be on hand after the film for questions. More Info.

NO MORE HOMELESS PETS BENEFIT - THIS FRIDAY

Don't forget to come out and support the show this friday. It's for a good cause with some great bands.

SLHC MUSIC ARCHIVE: TRIPHAMMER - S/T

Triphammer's six-track EP, released through Life Sentence Records, is one of my favorite SLC releases of all time. It's right up there with Lifeless, and maybe even a little bit higher.

The slow drone was different than the straight-forward hardcore that Lifeless and Clear had been perfecting for the better part of the late 90s, but that's what set them apart. Their live show was also something to be seen. Jared Hooper was constantly throwing up on stage and their set regularly ended with a lengthy drum solo. They were a band that was never afraid to try something a little different. It's a shame they broke up before they released anything else.

The Triphammer SLHC 101 is in the works, and will hopefully be available soon. In the meantime, download and listen.

TATTOOS LEAD TO DEVIANT BEHAVIOR

A team of scientists from Texas Tech University says that the more tattoos you have, the more likely you are to indulge in deviant behavior. Surprising, isn't it?

Dscriber.com -- Results indicate that respondents with four or more tattoos, seven or more body piercings, or piercings located in their nipples or genitals, were substantively and significantly more likely to report regular marijuana use, occasional use of other illegal drugs, and a history of being arrested for a crime," according to the research. "Less pronounced, but still significant in many cases, was an increased propensity for those with higher incidence of body art to cheat on college work, binge drink, and report having had multiple sex partners in the course of their lifetime."

Scientists surveyed 1,753 students from four American colleges — two state-supported public schools and two highly selective religious institutions — finding 37 percent reported at least one piercing and 14 percent were tattooed. Four percent reported having seven or more piercings, four or more tattoos, and/or at least one piercing in their nipples or genitals. Aside from their use of the body as a canvas, the students were asked about various aspects of their behavior, including drug and alcohol use, sexual activity and whether they cheat on tests.

SET IT STRAIGHT REUNION - MARCH 20

Set It Straight will be reuniting to play a benefit show for a friend's recently deceased family member on March 20 in Redding, CA. There will be a CD of unreleased material (b-sides, covers, etc.) available at the show. The details are still being worked out, but here's a statement from the group's bass player, Nate that was posted on the Bridge Nine message board.

"Yes we are playing. Yes, that is the date. Yes, we did just break up a little over two years ago. A very close friend of everyone in the band recently had a family member pass and we were asked to play to raise some funds for their needs. It was said by this band that there would never be any reunions of any sort, but this is not for us. It is for our friend, and we are helping him and family out in their time of need. I honestly can't think of any other reason as to why would play a show as Set it Straight anymore except for this. Every band is playing for free, and the venue is not collecting. ALL MONEY GOES TO THE FAMILY.

As far as the cd goes, there will be no profit for the band, label, or venue. I was unaware that the cd will be given away, but I would strongly suggest that a donation based price be set up for raising more money for our friend. It will contain mostly live tracks from our last show, some b sides, and maybe some tracks from a Youth of Today live set we did at Gilman.

As far as Harry not being edge anymore, you'll have to take it up with him. We are all still good friends and we support him in his life decisions. It would be good for those of you that are about to pass judgement to contact him personally and find out why he made the decisions he did instead of just posting your comments on this board. He would be more than happy to explain himself to any of you. Get a hold of him via our Myspace page if you really want to take that step.

As far as bands goes, I believe the show is already booked solid. We only had a meeting about this shit a couple days ago, and nothing official has been posted yet. I didn't think word would spread this fast. Bands TBA I guess. Thanks to anyone who has expressed interest, and tell everyone you know to come out and support a family in need.

Nate"

TONIGHT IN OGDEN

WARNER BROTHERS RECORDS DROPS GALLOWS

Warner Brothers Records has dropped British punk band Gallows after the groups second album failed to meet sales expectations. However, upon signing, the band received a large sum of their money up front and then released an album that was far less radio-friendly than the label hoped.

"We are the British music industry's biggest mistake," Gallows frontman Frank Carter told me 12 months ago during an interview promoting their second album, Grey Britain. Carter was responding to a question about how a punk band reacts when they've just signed a £1m record deal with Warner Music.

Rather than popping the champagne corks though, Carter was in the kind of articulate, unflinching mood that has made him a favourite interviewee for music journalists. Signed off the back of their live reputation and scorching 2006 debut Orchestra of Wolves – a punk/hardcore hybrid recorded by their mate in a house in the home counties – Gallows hit the jackpot with a lucrative deal when few bands were getting advances. And they were smart enough to know that, in many ways, it was all downhill from there. For a group that recalled second-wave UK punk bands like Discharge, it was the most brilliantly ridiculous major-label signing of recent times. "We see other bands being told what to do by their paymasters, but we're not one of them," guitarist Laurent Barnard said during the same interview.

INTEGRITY/RINGWORM/GEHENNA FOOTAGE FROM BALTIMORE

More here.

FOR THOSE WHO FEAR TO ROAD TRIP: THE FIFTH AND FINAL INSTALLMENT

There's a combination Dunkin Donuts/Baskin Robbins in downtown Baltimore with high-quality coffee and a clean bathroom. It's located next to a convenience store called 7-Twelve. Ringworm never disappoints. Red lights "don't effect" Mike Askerlund but many, many things effect Mike Cheese -- mainly hang-ups in his "dope" supply and guys who are afraid of oranges. Jake would rather attend every single Jazz game, even though he hates the Jazz, than do a lot of things. The average age of the current Integrity line-up is 7 and Dwid almost didn't make it to the show because his Mom wouldn't let him borrow the minivan.

Don't ever visit Baltimore.

FOR THOSE WHO FEAR TO ROAD TRIP: STEP FOUR

We just watched a homeless man set up an honest-to-god tent on the median of a busy downtown street. Go Baltimore.

FOR THOSE WHO FEAR TO ROAD TRIP: STEP THREE

Important road trip rule: always charge your cell phone before leaving... Especially if it's your navigator. Pulling into Baltimore my iPhone went black. We eventually managed to find the venue but realized we were still way early.

So wish us luck as we explore the beautiful city of Baltimore. Known for it's soup Jake says. And it's liquor stores apparently.

FOR THOSE WHO FEAR TO ROAD TRIP STEP TWO

Food's good. Waitin at Bliss for David. Ample coffee has been consumed. Runnin late so were skipping the train, catching a cab. In the meantime, you should google 'extreme arm wrestling.'

FOR THOSE WHO FEAR TO ROAD TRIP: STEP ONE

It's 9:37 a.m. Mike, Jake, Bill and I are rising. We've got to get to Bedford Avenue, meet David, charge up on a delicious breakfast with a couple pots of coffee at Bliss, catch the train out to JFK Airport, pick up our rental car and navigate our way out of New York City before we can kick off this road trip proper. It's three hours to Baltimore's Club Sonar where Integrity, Ringworm, Gehenna and Pulling Teeth will be playing at 7 p.m. -- Starkweather sadly canceled. Think we'll make it?

Well, you can find our right here are on GCA. So check back throughout the day to vicariously experience all the holy terror that is... FOR THOSE WHO FEAR THE ROAD TRIP!

TONIGHT IN SLC: 01/08/10

Greg Hahn @ Wiseguys Trolly Square
"Screw these jokes I've already heard 'em anyway." More info.

ONE VOICE: BROOK LUND

Brook Lund fronted some of Salt Lake's favorite/most-infamous hardcore acts: Dead Last, Carcano 6.5, Aftermath of a Trainwreck/Victims and the mighty Moshalicious. He handled vocal duties for Cherem on a tour that Billy couldn't make it out on, and most recently he played bass in the band City to City. He's also the proud proprietor of downtown Salt Lake's popular Este Pizzeria.

How were you introduced to the Salt Lake Hardcore scene?

I had been in to punk and HC since i was 11 or 12 from skate boarding videos, and Thrasher magazines. But I had never been to a true Hardcore show until i was probably 15 or 16. Then in the fall of 1998 Casey and Matt Whalie started bringing me around to shows on the regular. Sort of a weird time for shows in slc, great bands though. Seeing a show with Triphammer, Climb, Clear, and Lazarus Project about every other weekend.

Memorable SLHC moments?

There are so many good memories. There have been so many tours that at the time i felt like i was in sheer hell but looking back was amazing. Thinking back about any Cherem/Aftermath tour always makes me laugh.
Probably my best memory though was when about 30 of us went to 2001 Hellfest in NY.

Favorite Salt Lake Hardcore band?

My most favorite band that has come from slc has to be Triphammer. I really enjoyed Climb too. I really have to give it to Reflect too. I dont think ive been as stoked on a local band since the days of Triphammer/Clear/ Climb.

How has the Salt Lake Hardcore scene impacted your life?

Just about everyone of my closest friends I have met though the HC scene. Everybody always talks about the violence of the SLCHC scene but they never talk about the true brotherhood. I truly believe if youve been shunned from this scene its something YOU did. Everybody i have met has never been anything but super sincere with me.

What are your thoughts on the state of Hardcore and its future?

Ive got one more year before Im allowed to be fully jaded, but really the current state of hardcore makes me sick. The level of insincerity is overwhelming. It may have always been this way and i am just now realizing it. The biggest thing is I think everybody needs to realize this is for fun, stop taking it so fucking serious! Its not a job. Its not a way to make money, its not a way to be famous. I look around at shows and see so many kids with such serious faces. SMILE HAVE A GOOD TIME!
