I walked there after I got birthday money in sixth grade. I wanted a wallet chain really bad and this was the only place I knew you could get them.
I'd always look through the records and wish that I had a turntable that worked. By the time I actually got one, Raunch had moved and they tore down the building it was in and the laser tag place behind it so they could build what is now Barnes and Noble and Whole Foods.
I used to go there all the time and hang out there on a consistent basis. I used to buy my "big" tribal pants there too, back when it was cool to wear big fucking pants and be hardcore. I was sad to see it go.
one time, when i was about 13 i went to raunch when it was on 4th and 4th with my older cousin that got me into skateboarding/punk and hardcore etc. back then there was an overpass going over 4th west, and that's where a ton of the homeless people used to hang out.
we used to buy our records or tapes, and hide that shit in our shirt and run back or skate back towards state street as fast as possible to avoid being mugged.
one time, these dudes yelled at my cousin and i so we crossed the street as fast as scared as shit 13 and 16 year olds could and they sic'd their dogs after us.
we dodged 4th south traffic the best we could, to avoid the dogs that at the time seemed like fucking kujo. the whole time the two dudes sat on the sidewalk and laughed their asses off at us.
one awesome thing about RAUNCH was the poster sized flyers. i still have a few left, including two RAUNCH posters. i have a SLAPSHOT/INSIGHT/BETTERWAY flyer, youth of today, cro mags, danzig, DRI, the Accused,..... i know there's more too.
fuck yeah. i miss raunch. 4th so. 4th w. was the best location, then Brad C. moved it somewhere on either main or west temple for a while, then it moved to the sugarhouse location.... then that was the end of Raunch, because the 33rd south location was mostly just snowboards.
i've talked briefly with Brad C. and he mentioned possibly opening another RAUNCH records storefront.... i know he still sells stuf fon ebay once in a while under the name BabyRaunch. still throws up some gems once in a while. last year he sold a 1989 gorilla biscuits tour shirt that was never even worn.
When I was in 7th Grade my friend and I would walk there after school to look for Nirvana Imports and Bootlegs. I think I may also have purchased a Wallet chain around that time and plenty of Incense. But if it were not for Raunch I dount I would have started going to shows when I did. I met a kid there in 8th grade that took us to Playschool to see Iceburn Riverbed Jed and Far. I remember me and matt buying a judge 7 and the gorilla biscuits 7 there and make a tape at home that must have been reproduced 100 times cause we would ruin one almost every week from his stupid truck eating it. Buying Black Flag 12"s and arguing that Henry Rollins was the worst of all the singers and then going there when Weight came out and buying it so we could rock Liar all day. Al Slack giving us a Militant Vegan zine and fliers to basement DV8 shows. The Red haired guy smoking weed in the back all the time.Taking my mom there for school cloths and buying hoodies from the spinners full of tribal pants and fuct cloths. Her being weirded the fuck out. Going up to the 3300 store and buying shit 50% off that I didnt even want just cause we felt bad. Watching tom and troy trip out when that guy talked about closing up and how he sold a bunch of crazy shit for nothing to some guy.
I was in L.A. for Latino Fest a couple months ago and I was talking to this dude at the Crudos booth and when I said I was from Salt Lake the first thing he mentioned was Raunch records.
My favorite Raunch memories...Every fucking day we would go there and Brad and the other fuckers would make PATRICO BONKER GONZALES stay out side cause he had no money and they thought he was trying to steal all that gay clothing and all the what have yous hahahah motherfuck!!!!!
Spidey do you remember taking the bus there getting off on 2100s 700e and some nasty bitch left her bloody tampon on the sidewalk for all to see? I must have only been 14 but that sight made me the man i am today.........
